A 38-year-old yoga instructor in Hayathnagar depends on her MacBook for class bookings, music and video sessions. One day the trackpad stops clicking, then starts clicking on its own. This post is for anyone in that position: it explains what the symptoms can mean, what you can safely check at home, and why a quote for a trackpad replacement varies from one MacBook to another.
What decides the cost of a MacBook trackpad replacement?
Short answer: Four things: your MacBook model, what is actually wrong (the trackpad itself, the battery under it, or the top case), the cost of the parts, and the labour to open the Mac. Because the trackpad often sits above the battery, a quote can include more than the trackpad. A fair figure comes only after diagnosis, and we share it for your approval before any work.
What symptoms point to a trackpad problem?
- The trackpad does not click, or the click feels stuck or uneven.
- The pointer jumps or the Mac clicks by itself (ghost clicks).
- The trackpad does not respond at all, while the keyboard works.
- The trackpad looks raised at one edge, or the case no longer sits flat on the table.
Our post on enabling a laptop touchpad when it stops working covers general Windows cases. MacBooks have their own steps, below.
What can I safely check at home?
1. Restart the Mac
A restart clears small software glitches. Press and hold the power button only if the Mac is frozen.
2. Check settings
Open Apple menu, System Settings, then Trackpad, and test Tap to click and the click strength. Also open Accessibility, Pointer Control, and look at Trackpad Options, where settings such as ignoring the built-in trackpad when a mouse is connected may be turned on. The wording can differ slightly between macOS versions.
3. Connect a mouse and test
If a USB or Bluetooth mouse works and the trackpad does not, the problem is likely hardware. If the mouse also jumps, a software cause or a lifted battery is more likely.
4. Look at the case from the side
Put the closed MacBook on a flat table and look along it at eye level. Check whether it rocks, or whether the trackpad or bottom cover bulges. If you see a bulge, switch the Mac off, unplug the charger and do not press the trackpad or the bottom case. Never puncture or squeeze a swollen battery.
Why is the battery part of a trackpad quote?
On many MacBook models the trackpad sits above the battery, with the battery cells under it. A battery that swells with age can push the trackpad upwards. The click then feels stiff or stops, and the surface may lift. Replacing only the trackpad in that case may not solve the problem for long, so the repair may include the battery, and sometimes the top case too (the aluminium part that holds the keyboard and trackpad). Which parts are involved depends on the model. Our guide to MacBook battery replacement explains what drives that cost, and our MacBook keyboard replacement guide shows how top-case work affects a quote.
Courier or doorstep for a MacBook repair
In Hayathnagar, a doorstep visit or carry-in to our MG Road, Secunderabad store is the simplest route, and a courier is another way to reach a repair bench. Pack the MacBook in a box with padding, keep the charger, and note any serial number from the underside. Do not send a MacBook with a visible bulge in a bag or loose in a box without talking to us first, because a bulging battery may need special handling before it travels. Copy your files to an external drive before sending, and sign out of your Apple account if you can. In Hyderabad, we offer doorstep pickup (see laptop repair in Hayathnagar), covered on our Secunderabad Apple page. For a comparison of Apple's service and independent repair, read Apple AASP vs independent MacBook repair in India.
When to get help
Ask a technician if any of these apply:
- The trackpad or case is raised, or the Mac no longer lies flat.
- The trackpad does not click even after a restart and a settings check.
- Ghost clicks keep happening with a mouse connected.
- The battery drains fast or the Mac feels warm when idle.
A MacBook still under Apple's warranty should go to Apple's authorised service first. We are an independent repair service and help with MacBooks out of warranty or when the owner chooses independent repair. See our Apple trackpad repair page and the Apple hub. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Treat a lifted trackpad as a battery warning first and a trackpad problem second. Stop charging, copy your files if the Mac still starts, and bring it in. Catching a swollen battery early often keeps the job smaller than waiting until the case bends.
