Before deciding whether to replace your battery, check where you actually stand. Apple gives you this data for free, built into macOS.

Step-by-step: Click the Apple menu (top-left corner of your screen) → About This Mac → click System Information → in the left sidebar under Hardware, scroll to Power → look for Cycle Count under the Battery Information section.

A cycle count is not the same as a number of times you’ve plugged in your charger. One cycle = one full 100% equivalent discharge. If you use 50% of your battery on Monday and top it up, then use another 50% on Tuesday and top it up again, that counts as one cycle — spread across two days. Apple designs MacBook batteries to retain at least 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 cycles.

What the numbers mean in practice:

• 0–500 cycles: Battery is in good shape. Replacement is likely 2+ years away under normal use.
• 500–800 cycles: Watch for noticeable capacity drop, especially during Indian summer. Actual hours of use per charge will be meaningfully shorter than when new.
• 800–1,000 cycles: Replacement recommended. Capacity at this stage is typically 70–80% of original.
• 1,000+ cycles: Apple considers the battery “consumed.” Time to replace. Performance throttling is possible under heavy load as macOS protects an aging cell.

M-series advertised battery life vs real-world India use

Apple advertises 15–22 hours for M-series MacBooks. Those numbers come from controlled tests: 50% screen brightness, Wi-Fi on, Apple’s own productivity apps, no background processes. No Indian working professional uses their MacBook that way.

Real India use — Zoom or Google Meet calls, browser with 12–20 tabs open, PDF documents, maybe a Figma or VS Code session running in the background — delivers closer to 8–12 hours on an M1 or M2 Air, and 10–14 hours on a Pro. Still excellent compared to most Windows alternatives, but not what the spec sheet says.

After 1,000 cycles, with battery capacity at roughly 80%, those numbers drop proportionally: a MacBook Air M1 that previously lasted 10 hours in your typical workflow will now last 8 hours. That is still usable for most people. But at 70% capacity (common around cycles 1,100–1,300), you are looking at 6–7 hours — the point where the charger becomes a constant companion.

Signs your MacBook battery needs replacement

Some of these are obvious, some are not. Watch for:

• Battery lasting under 4 hours at full charge when it used to last 8+ hours on the same workload.
• macOS Battery Health shows “Service Recommended” — Apple’s own system is flagging the degradation.
• MacBook shuts down at 20–30% charge without warning — the battery can no longer supply the burst current the processor demands under load.
• Battery percentage jumping erratically — dropping from 40% to 10% in minutes, or jumping upward when you reconnect the charger by more than a few percent.
• MacBook running unusually hot under light load — a swollen battery (one that has begun to expand internally) can press against the logic board and generate heat even when the CPU is idle.
• Visible bulge on the trackpad — this is a serious sign. A swollen battery physically pushes the trackpad upward. If your trackpad clicks feel stiff or uneven, or if you can see the trackpad sitting slightly proud of the palm rest, bring the MacBook in immediately.
