MacBook repair decisions are more complicated than Windows laptop repairs — the chip architecture, soldered storage, T2 security chip, and Apple-proprietary calibration all affect what a repair costs and whether it's worth doing. This guide covers what every MacBook owner in India needs to know before walking into any service centre, independent or authorised.
M-series vs Intel Mac — why the repair era matters
The single most important thing to know before booking any MacBook repair in India is which processor generation your Mac uses. M-series and Intel Macs have fundamentally different architectures, and that difference changes what repairs are possible, how long they take, and what they cost.
M-series MacBooks (Apple Silicon, 2020–present)
The M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips — collectively called Apple Silicon — integrate the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine (Apple's AI accelerator) onto a single die called an SoC (system-on-chip). This design delivers exceptional performance and battery life. The downside for repair: the SSD (solid-state storage) is soldered directly to the logic board and is not user-replaceable or upgradeable after purchase. If the SSD fails on an M-series Mac, there is no recovery path without a prior Time Machine (Apple's built-in backup software) backup — the storage encryption keys are tied to the chip itself.
M-series MacBook lineup includes: MacBook Air M1/M2/M3 (13-inch and 15-inch), MacBook Pro 13 M1/M2, MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro/M2 Pro/M3 Pro/M4 Pro, and MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro/M1 Max/M2 Pro/M2 Max/M3 Pro/M3 Max/M4 Pro/M4 Max. Visit the Apple MacBook repair hub for model-specific guidance.
Intel MacBooks (pre-2021, legacy models)
Intel-era MacBooks use a traditional CPU and discrete GPU architecture. The SSD was sometimes soldered (MacBook Pro 2018 onwards used a soldered T2-encrypted SSD) or on a removable blade (older MacBook Air and Pro models). The key difference: fault isolation is generally easier on Intel Macs because the CPU, RAM chips (though soldered), and storage controller sit as separate components rather than on a unified die.
The T2 chip on 2018–2020 Intel Macs
Intel MacBook Pro models from 2018, 2019, and 2020 (13-inch and 16-inch) include Apple's T2 chip — Apple's security chip that handles TouchID, secure enclave, SSD encryption keys, and secure boot. If the T2 develops a firmware issue, the Mac can appear completely unresponsive even when the main Intel CPU is functioning. Logic board repairs on T2 models carry added complexity; some require Apple's proprietary AST2 (Apple Service Toolkit) diagnostic tools to complete calibration post-repair. Always tell your service centre if your Mac is a 2018–2020 Intel model.
DEP — what corporate Mac owners must check first
DEP (Device Enrollment Profile) is the system companies use to manage employee Macs through MDM (Mobile Device Management). A DEP-enrolled Mac will refuse to boot normally after a logic board replacement without MDM approval from the company's IT team. Before bringing a work Mac in for any board-level work, go to Settings > General > Device Management and check if an MDM profile is installed. If it is, get your IT team's MDM credentials ready — we will need them to complete the repair.
Mac mini M2/M4 and Mac Studio M1 Ultra/M2 Ultra/M4 Max
Desktop-class Apple Silicon Macs follow the same soldered-SSD rule as MacBook laptops. Mac mini M2 and M4 are popular in India as home and small office machines. Mac Studio with M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra, or M4 Max serves creative professionals. All SSD storage on these models is soldered — no upgrade is possible. Common desktop Mac repairs include power supply failure, port board faults (HDMI, USB-C), fan issues, and — in the case of M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra Mac Studio — occasional issues with the UltraFusion interconnect between the two chiplets that form the Ultra chip.

When to repair vs replace your MacBook
The repair-vs-replace decision is not just about cost — it is about the remaining useful life of your machine and the data on it.
Repair almost always wins for these components
Screen replacement, battery replacement, keyboard, and hinge repair are almost always worth doing — even on older models. A MacBook Air M1 (2020) with a cracked screen is still a powerful machine that Apple will support with macOS updates through at least 2027–28. Spending ₹12,000–₹18,000 on a screen replacement instead of ₹85,000+ on a new Mac Air is straightforward math. The same applies to battery replacement — a MacBook whose battery swells or loses more than 20% capacity is a two-hour battery replacement away from being like new.
When replacement makes more sense
Consider replacement over repair in these scenarios: the logic board fault costs more than 50% of a comparable refurbished model's market value; M-series SSD failure with no Time Machine backup (the data is gone, and a board repair only recovers the machine, not the data); or liquid damage that has spread to multiple components simultaneously, driving repair costs above 60% of replacement value.
M-series longevity is on your side
M1 MacBooks launched in late 2020 are still fully supported in current macOS and will likely receive updates through 2028 or beyond — Apple typically supports Mac hardware for 7–8 years from launch. That makes an M1 MacBook Air purchased in 2021 a sensible repair candidate well into 2028. By contrast, Intel Macs from 2016–2017 are now reaching the end of macOS support (Sequoia dropped support for several 2017 models) — factor this in before spending significantly on an older Intel machine.
AppleCare+ vs independent repair — the India math
Many MacBook owners in India are unsure whether to use their AppleCare+ coverage or go to an independent specialist. Here is how the numbers actually work.
What AppleCare+ covers in India
AppleCare+ (Apple's extended warranty and accidental damage coverage plan) is now available in India and covers accidental damage with a per-incident fee rather than the full repair cost. A screen damage claim under AppleCare+ in India typically costs ₹5,700–₹9,500 as your deductible — compared to the full ₹25,000–₹60,000+ without coverage. Battery service is included at no charge if the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity.
Out-of-warranty Apple Store / ASP costs
Without AppleCare+, Apple Store (Apple's own retail stores) and ASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) screen replacement for a MacBook Pro 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR can cost ₹55,000–₹80,000+ in India at list price. For a MacBook Air, it is lower but still ₹20,000–₹35,000. Apple does not offer chip-level logic board repair at any ASP — their standard response to a board fault is full board replacement, which inflates costs significantly.
Independent certified repair — the 40–60% savings
Quality independent repair centres in India typically charge 40–60% less than Apple Store / ASP for identical repair quality on out-of-warranty work. The caveat: some M-series repairs — particularly those that replace the logic board or touch components managed by the Secure Enclave (Apple's secure processor within the chip) — may require Apple's proprietary calibration tools for the fingerprint sensor or True Tone display to work correctly post-repair. Always ask your service centre whether calibration tools are available before approving board-level work. At LRW's Apple MacBook service, we are transparent about which repairs require Apple ASP tools and which we can complete fully in-house.
T2 chip and DEP — what to know before you bring your Mac in
Two features unique to certain MacBook models complicate board-level repairs more than most owners realise.
The T2 chip — when a Mac looks dead but is not
The T2 chip (Apple's security chip, present in 2018–2020 Intel MacBook Pro 13, MacBook Pro 16, and MacBook Air models) manages TouchID, the Secure Enclave (the isolated processor that stores fingerprint data and encryption keys), SSD encryption, and secure boot. If the T2 develops a firmware issue — which can happen after a failed macOS update or a power surge — the Mac can appear completely unresponsive. Fans may not spin. The screen shows nothing. This is sometimes misdiagnosed as a logic board failure when the fix is a T2 firmware restore using Apple's DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode.
A good diagnostic step before authorising any major repair on a 2018–2020 Intel Mac: ensure a T2 DFU restore has been attempted first. At LRW, this is part of our ₹149 diagnosis process for Intel-era Macs.
DEP lock — the corporate Mac complication
DEP (Device Enrollment Profile) is the mechanism through which companies enrol employee Macs into their MDM (Mobile Device Management — the software companies use to remotely manage, configure, and lock corporate laptops). A DEP-enrolled Mac that undergoes a logic board swap may boot into Activation Lock, demanding MDM credentials that only the company's IT department holds. Without those credentials, the repaired Mac cannot be used.
What to do: before bringing in any work Mac for logic board work, check Settings > General > Device Management. If a configuration profile is listed, get your company IT team's MDM server credentials. Without them, board-level work on a DEP Mac is not worth starting.
Liquid damage on a MacBook — act within 24 hours
Liquid damage is time-sensitive in a way that no other MacBook repair is. The moment liquid contacts the logic board, corrosion begins. On M-series Macs, the denser, more compact board layout means a spill can bridge multiple component areas simultaneously.
Immediate steps — do these right now
If liquid has entered your MacBook: power off immediately by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Do not let it go to sleep — force it off. Do NOT plug the charger in. Turn the Mac upside-down so gravity pulls liquid away from the board, not deeper into it. Do not use a hairdryer or put it in a bag of rice — both are myths that allow more corrosion time to accumulate while you delay real repair. Bring it in within 24 hours.
Early assessment at our workshop involves ultrasonic cleaning (using an ultrasonic bath to remove mineral deposits from liquid) if the Mac reaches us quickly. Once corrosion has set into fine-pitch BGA solder joints — which can happen within 48–72 hours — the repair scope and cost increase significantly. Read more on our liquid damage repair page.
What liquid damage costs — the honest range
Liquid damage assessment and cleaning: ₹6,000–₹10,000 if caught within 24 hours and corrosion is minimal. Board-level component replacement (corroded ICs, USB-C controller, power management chips): ₹15,000–₹30,000 if multiple components are affected. In the worst cases — where liquid has shorted the SoC on an M-series Mac — the board is a total loss. This is why speed matters more than any other factor with liquid damage.
Mac mini and Mac Studio repairs in India
Desktop Apple Silicon Macs are growing in popularity in India — the Mac mini M2 in particular is an outstanding value proposition for home offices and small studios. Repair patterns on these machines differ from MacBook laptops.
Mac mini M2 / M4 — common faults
The Mac mini M2 and M4 are compact and generally reliable machines. The most common repairs we see: power supply failure (the internal PSU can fail, particularly in areas with unstable mains supply — use a genuine surge protector), HDMI port failure (the HDMI 2.1 port on M2 mini is on a separate port board, making it more repairable than a soldered HDMI port on a laptop), and USB-C / Thunderbolt port wear. SSD on Mac mini M2/M4 is soldered — no upgrade is possible.
Mac Studio M1 Ultra / M2 Ultra / M4 Max
Mac Studio machines use Apple's most powerful chips and are significantly more expensive to repair. The M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra are two chips joined by Apple's UltraFusion interconnect — a fault in the interconnect requires a full board replacement as there is no chip-level repair path for the join itself. Mac Studio repairs are best handled by specialists with M-series board experience. Visit our Apple MacBook service page for booking or to WhatsApp us for a Mac Studio quote before bringing it in.
How LRW handles MacBook repairs in India
Every MacBook repair at LRW follows the same process: our engineer visits your location in India, performs a diagnosis (₹149 visit charge), and provides a written quote before any work begins. No Fix No Fee — if we cannot fix it, you pay nothing beyond the visit charge. All repairs carry a 30-day warranty on parts and labour.
For M-series MacBooks, we are transparent about which repairs we complete fully in-house and which require Apple ASP tooling for sensor calibration. We will tell you upfront — not after disassembly. For logic board chip-level work, we use 45x stereo microscopy and oscilloscope diagnosis to isolate faults before quoting. This is how we regularly find repairable chip faults in Macs that other centres have quoted a full board swap for.
