Why MacBook Pro keyboard repair costs so much more than Windows laptops
Short answer: On any MacBook Pro from M1 onwards, the keyboard is not a standalone replaceable part. Apple bonds it to the top-case assembly — a single unit that includes the keyboard, battery connector board, and trackpad flex cable. Replacing one stuck key means replacing the entire top-case. In India, that assembly costs ₹18,000–₹45,000 depending on model, sourcing channel, and whether the original battery is reused.
What the top-case design means in practice
Step 1 — Understand what gets replaced
The top-case is the entire upper shell of the MacBook: aluminium lid-half with keyboard cut-outs, backlight layer, trackpad cable routing, and antenna feeds. On M4/M5 models, Apple has further integrated the Touch ID sensor into this assembly. When a technician replaces the top-case, they transfer the logic board, display cable, speakers, and fan assembly into the new shell — a disassembly-level job that takes 3–5 hours on a clean bench.
This is different from older Intel-era MacBook Pros (pre-2019), where the keyboard was screwed into the chassis and could be replaced independently for around ₹4,000–₹8,000. Those models are now legacy hardware; if your MacBook was bought after 2020, assume the bonded top-case design applies.
Step 2 — Get a liquid-damage assessment first
Most keyboard failures we see in the workshop fall into two buckets: mechanical wear (a few keys stop registering) and liquid ingress (keys become sticky or ghost-type on their own). Only the keyboard-mechanical failure is a straightforward top-case swap. Liquid ingress complicates the picture because moisture that reached the keyboard almost certainly also reached the logic board below it. Before committing to a ₹20,000+ top-case, a corrosion assessment of the logic board is essential — otherwise you replace the top-case, power on, and find a board fault that costs another ₹15,000–₹30,000 to address. Step 3 — Compare independent vs Apple ASC pricing
Apple Authorised Service Centres in India price top-case replacements at OEM-plus-labour rates that typically run 30–60% above what a quality independent centre charges for a genuine or high-grade OEM-equivalent assembly. For a 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4/M5), Apple ASC quotes we have seen customers bring in range from ₹35,000–₹55,000. At our independent bench, the same repair using a genuine OEM assembly runs ₹18,000–₹32,000, with the original battery transferred at no extra charge.
The caveat is warranty: Apple ASC repair carries a 90-day Apple warranty. Our repair carries a 30-day parts-and-labour warranty — shorter, but sufficient for a part that either works correctly from day one or shows assembly errors within two weeks.
Step 4 — The India context: humidity and dust
