Is the MacBook Air M5 meaningfully better than the M4 in India?
Short answer: For the majority of Indian users — students, professionals, casual creators — the real-world difference between M5 and M4 Air is modest. Both machines feel instant in daily use. The M5 wins in sustained compute tasks and has improved media engines that speed up video export. If you are buying new, the M5 is the right choice at similar prices. If you own an M4, upgrading purely for the M5 chip is not justified.
What actually changed from M4 to M5
CPU and GPU core counts
The M5 chip in the Air uses a 10-core CPU (4 performance + 6 efficiency cores) and a 10-core GPU, up from M4's 10-core CPU (4P + 6E) and 10-core GPU. The core layout is similar — Apple improved the microarchitecture itself. In multi-core benchmarks, the M5 scores roughly 20–25% higher than the M4. For single-core tasks (which is most of what a laptop does day-to-day), the gap is around 15%. This translates to faster exports in Final Cut Pro, quicker Xcode compiles, and smoother multi-layer photo edits — but not a night-and-day shift in general responsiveness.
Neural Engine and Apple Intelligence
The M5 ships with a 38-TOPS (tera-operations per second) Neural Engine (the dedicated AI processing chip), up from M4's 38 TOPS — actually the same figure. The practical difference is in the memory bandwidth and the on-device ML model sizes the M5 can run efficiently. For Apple Intelligence features in macOS Sequoia and beyond, M5 handles larger on-device models without any latency. This will matter progressively more as AI-assisted tools proliferate in creative software.
Memory and bandwidth
The M5 Air starts with 16 GB of unified memory as the base configuration — a meaningful improvement over the M4's 16 GB base (and the M3's 8 GB base). Memory bandwidth increased to around 120 GB/s from the M4's 120 GB/s — largely similar but with improved compression efficiency in practice. For video editors pushing 4K multi-cam in Final Cut Pro, the 24 GB option handles more streams before performance degrades.
India-specific considerations
Thermal performance in summer
Both the M4 Air and M5 Air are fanless — they rely on passive cooling through the aluminium unibody chassis. In Indian summers when room temperature regularly crosses 35–40°C, sustained heavy workloads (a long video export, Stable Diffusion runs, large Xcode projects) will cause the chip to throttle — reduce its clock speed to manage heat. Price comparison
At launch, the MacBook Air M5 (13-inch, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) starts at approximately ₹1,09,900. The M5 15-inch base is around ₹1,34,900. As M5 stock becomes available, M4 Air prices will drop — you may find M4 Air units at ₹85,000–₹95,000 once clearance begins. Which to buy: decision framework
Coming from an Intel MacBook Air (2019 or older): the M5 is a transformative upgrade — you will notice it in everything from boot time to web browsing. Coming from M1 or M2 Air: the M5 is noticeably faster for creative work and AI tasks. Coming from M3 or M4 Air: the performance gains are real but unlikely to change your daily experience. Repair reality: what changes with M5
From a serviceability standpoint, the M5 Air is structurally similar to the M4 Air. The battery (around ₹8,000–₹12,000 to replace at independent repair centres), display assembly, and keyboard are serviceable. The SoC, RAM, and SSD remain soldered — no post-purchase upgrades are possible. The M4 Air is already an outstanding machine. The M5 improves it — it does not redefine it. Buy the M5 if you are purchasing today or upgrading from a pre-M3 MacBook. If your M4 Air is working well, keep it for another 18 months and reassess when the M6 lands. India's heat and power conditions do not change the chip comparison — they change the cooling comparison, and on that front both M5 and M4 Air behave identically.
