MacBook Air M2 vs M3 vs M4 India: Which to Buy in 2025?
Short answer: The M3 MacBook Air is the current sweet spot for most Indian buyers — it delivers an 18–20% CPU and 30–35% GPU improvement over M2, runs completely fanless (no fan in any Air model, so no thermal throttling under typical use), and the repair ecosystem is maturing. M2 is an outstanding value buy if found at ₹15,000+ below M3. M4 is worth the jump if you run local AI/ML inference, edit professional video, or plan to own the laptop for 6+ years.
The buying matrix
Buy M2 if
You find a genuine M2 MacBook Air from an authorised Indian reseller at ₹85,000–₹95,000. At that price, the M2 is a phenomenal value proposition — the performance gap between M2 and M3 is rarely noticeable in everyday tasks, and M2 Macs will receive macOS updates until at least 2030. Students buying their first Mac, writers, teachers, and office workers on a budget who want a reliable Apple machine should strongly consider a legitimately discounted M2. The battery life (18 hours Apple-rated, 12–15 hours real India mixed use) is class-leading at any generation.
Buy M3 if
You are buying new and the price is within ₹15,000 of the M4. M3 brings the 3nm chip architecture that Apple refined before M4. The Neural Engine (the dedicated AI chip in Apple Silicon for local machine learning tasks) is significantly faster than M2 and handles the AI features in macOS Sequoia well. For photographers working in Lightroom, video editors working up to 4K, developers building iOS/macOS apps, and creative professionals, M3 is the minimum recommended Apple Silicon for a 4-year ownership plan. The repair ecosystem — batteries, screens, keyboards — is more mature and parts are more available than M4 in India.
Buy M4 if
You need the absolute latest. M4 (3nm 2nd gen, TSMC N3E process) adds a faster Neural Engine for local AI inference, improved memory bandwidth relevant for 8K video editing and large local ML models, and support for up to 32GB unified memory on the Air (up from 24GB on M3 Air). For data scientists running inference on large language models locally, pro video editors working with ProRes RAW, and buyers who want the hardware to last a full 6+ years before replacement, M4 justifies the premium. Expect ₹15,000–₹25,000 more than equivalent M3 spec in India at current pricing. For our detailed M4 vs M3 thermal comparison, see the MacBook Air M4 vs M3 battery and thermal guide. A note from the LRW Engineer Team
All three MacBook Air generations are excellent machines. The choice is genuinely about budget and use case, not about one being defective or inferior. The fanless design means all three run completely silently — no fan noise at any load level. The main repair caution applies equally to all: MacBook Air displays and batteries are more expensive to replace than comparable Windows laptop components. A screen protector and a proper sleeve are inexpensive insurance on a ₹90,000–₹1,15,000 machine.
