If you play on a first-generation Lenovo Legion Go, whether on Steam, Xbox Game Pass or emulators, your saves and settings live on one small device. This guide is for gamers and parents who want to update the BIOS (the small program that starts the handheld before Windows loads) without risking years of progress. You will learn what to back up, how to note your BIOS version, and what to do if the handheld will not start.
Why back up a Legion Go before a BIOS update?
Short answer: A BIOS update rewrites the program that starts the device. If something goes wrong, the handheld may not reach Windows, and your saves and files stay locked inside. SteamDeckHQ reported on 26 August 2026 that some first-generation Legion Go users saw a black screen or no start after BIOS version N3CN42WW, and that Lenovo removed the update. A backup means a failed update costs time, not progress.
What do I back up?
Game saves
Steam saves usually sync to Steam Cloud, but not every game supports it. Open each game you care about and check for a cloud sync tick. Games from other stores may keep saves in your Documents or AppData folders. Emulators keep saves in their own folders; copy those too.
Personal files
Copy Documents, Pictures, Downloads and any folder you created to an external SSD or a microSD card. Our guide on Steam saves and cloud recovery goes into more detail.
Windows Backup
In Windows 11, open Settings, then Accounts, then Windows Backup. It can back up folders, settings and apps lists to your Microsoft account. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Note that it does not copy large game files, so keep your launcher login details handy.
Account details
Write down your launcher usernames and make sure two-factor sign-in codes work on another phone. Save your Wi-Fi password.
What should I do before pressing Update?
- Note your current BIOS version. Press Windows key and R, type msinfo32 and look at the BIOS Version line. Take a photo.
- Read the maker's page. Open Lenovo's support page for the Legion Go and read the release notes of the BIOS you plan to install. Check the status today, since Lenovo's advice can change.
- Charge fully. Keep the charger connected and use a steady wall socket.
- Close everything. Quit games and launchers, and disconnect docks and accessories.
- Do the update and wait. The screen may go dark or restart several times. Do not press the power button or unplug the charger while the update runs.
Our checklist what to do before every laptop BIOS update applies to handhelds too.
Power cuts and BIOS updates in India
A power cut or a voltage dip during a BIOS update can stop the update midway. A handheld has a battery, which helps, but only if it is well charged and the charger can be removed safely. Start the update only when the battery is full and the room has stable power. If you live where cuts are common, update in the day, not late at night when you cannot watch the screen.
What if the Legion Go will not start after an update?
First, leave it plugged in for some time. Then follow the power-button reset steps on Lenovo's Legion Go support page, since the exact steps can differ by model. Do not try random key combinations, and do not open the case. If the screen stays black, stop and ask a technician. Press reports said some users were left with units that would not start. Press reports also quoted a Lenovo representative on repairing affected out-of-warranty units free, mainly cited for the EU, while some users still reported being charged. We cannot promise any free repair in India. Ask Lenovo directly for your case, and keep your purchase proof.
When to get help
Ask a technician if the handheld shows a black screen after an update, restarts in a loop, shows no charging light, or you need files from a device that will not start. We can assess a handheld that will not boot, and data may or may not be recoverable, depending on the fault. See our Lenovo data recovery page and the Lenovo repair hub. We serve Hyderabad homes through our Lenovo service page for Secunderabad and accept devices by courier from anywhere in India. A handheld within Lenovo warranty should go to Lenovo's authorised service first. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Do the backup first, then decide if the update is needed. If your handheld works well and the release notes do not mention a problem you have, waiting is acceptable. When you do update, do it with a full battery, the charger plugged in and an hour with nothing else to do.
