You are buying a laptop and the box says Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, but you are not sure what that means or whether your home router will matter. This guide shows how to read a laptop's Wi-Fi line on a spec sheet, uses two laptops launched in India this year as worked examples, and tells you how to check an existing laptop. You will be able to tell in two minutes whether a laptop can use the 6 GHz band.
Which new laptops can use the 6 GHz Wi-Fi band in India?
Short answer: Any laptop whose Wi-Fi is listed as Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 can be built to use the 6 GHz band, while one listed as Wi-Fi 6 or older cannot. Samsung lists Wi-Fi 6E for the Galaxy Book6, and Lenovo lists Wi-Fi 7 for the IdeaPad 5 2-in-1. Always read the full specification of the exact model, since one name can cover several versions.
What do the Wi-Fi names mean?
Wi-Fi 6 works on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6E is the same technology extended to a third band at 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 7 is the newer standard; many Wi-Fi 7 products also work at 6 GHz, but you should confirm from the specification that 6 GHz or tri-band is listed. India opened the lower 6 GHz band for low-power indoor use under rules dated 20 January 2026, so this support is now useful in the country.
Two launch examples
The Galaxy Book6 Pro and Ultra versions list other details, such as an AMOLED screen and larger batteries, but the Wi-Fi line quoted here is the one stated for the Galaxy Book6. For the Lenovo, Wi-Fi 7 is listed but 6 GHz support is not spelled out; confirm with the seller. Wh is a battery size unit, and our battery Wh explainer shows how to compare it.
How do I read any spec sheet?
- Find the line called Wireless, WLAN or Connectivity.
- Look for Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7 or the words 6 GHz or tri-band.
- If it only says Wi-Fi 6, 802.11ax dual-band or Wi-Fi 5, the laptop will not use 6 GHz.
- Ask the seller to confirm in writing if the sheet does not say.
Check a laptop you already own
In Windows 11, connect to your Wi-Fi, then open Settings, then Network and internet, then Wi-Fi, then your network's Hardware properties. It shows the network band in use, such as 5 GHz. The wording can differ slightly between versions. This tells you the band you are on now; if you are on 5 GHz with a 6 GHz router nearby, the laptop may not support 6 GHz. Check the maker's page for your exact model number as well.
Can I upgrade the Wi-Fi card later?
It depends on the model. Some laptops have a removable Wi-Fi card, while others have it fixed to the board. Whether the card can be changed is not stated for the laptops above, so check the service manual or ask a technician before you count on an upgrade. Prices, thick walls and power cuts
Launch prices are at launch, and shop prices change, so confirm today's price. The 6 GHz band covers a shorter distance through walls, which matters in homes with thick concrete, so place the router in the room where you work. Do not judge a laptop by its Wi-Fi label alone because the router, the walls and your internet plan decide what you actually get. Power cuts and voltage dips can also reset routers, so keep a proper charger and a surge-protected socket.
When to get help
- Wi-Fi shows no networks, or only 2.4 GHz networks, on a laptop that should support more.
- Wi-Fi works for a few minutes, then drops during a call.
- Problems began after a Windows update or driver change.
- The Wi-Fi switch or button does nothing.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before you pay, take a photo of the spec sheet or box line that says the Wi-Fi version, and keep it with the invoice. If the line is missing, ask for the model number and look it up on the maker's own page. A small habit like this avoids many disappointments with wireless features.
