Is Wi-Fi 7 worth buying for a laptop home setup in India right now?
Short answer: Yes, if you have 4+ devices competing for bandwidth or frequently transfer large files over the network. Wi-Fi 7 (formally IEEE 802.11be) introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO — the ability to bond the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands simultaneously), 4K-QAM modulation (denser data packing), and 320 MHz channel width on the 6 GHz band. In practical India home use, the biggest gain is reduced congestion: Indian apartment buildings are notoriously crowded with overlapping Wi-Fi networks, and 6 GHz is almost entirely empty in most residential areas. Price in India: ₹8,000–₹35,000.
How to choose a Wi-Fi 7 router for laptop use in India
Step 1: Speed class — BE7200 vs BE9000 vs BE19000
Router manufacturers label models with their combined peak speeds across all bands. A BE7200 router delivers up to 7.2 Gbps combined (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 6 GHz). A BE9000 goes to 9 Gbps combined. BE19000 and above are premium 4×4 MIMO (multiple transmit and receive antennas — more simultaneous streams) routers suited for large homes or offices. For a typical 2–3 BHK with 5–10 devices including 2–3 laptops, a BE7200 or BE9000 model at ₹10,000–₹18,000 is the practical sweet spot. The theoretical peak speeds are never achieved in real homes — what matters is the floor: how good is the connection when multiple devices are simultaneously active?
Step 2: 6 GHz band reality in India
India's telecom regulator (DoT/WPC) has opened the 6 GHz band (5.925–7.125 GHz) for unlicensed Wi-Fi use, which makes Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers fully legal to use in India. The 6 GHz band has no legacy devices competing for it (no Wi-Fi 4 or Wi-Fi 5 devices use it), so interference is minimal. However, 6 GHz has shorter range than 5 GHz — walls and floors attenuate the signal more strongly. In a compact 2-BHK flat, the Wi-Fi 7 router's 6 GHz band covers the entire space. In a 4-BHK or villa, consider a mesh Wi-Fi 7 system rather than a single router. Connect your laptop to the 6 GHz band for the cleanest, fastest link whenever you are within 8–10 metres of the router.
Step 3: WAN port speed vs ISP plan speed
Most home broadband plans in India deliver 100–1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps fibre). A router with a 2.5 GbE WAN port is future-proof if your ISP upgrades to multi-gigabit speeds. For plans up to 1 Gbps, a standard Gigabit Ethernet WAN port is fine. Do not pay a premium for a 10 GbE WAN port unless your ISP explicitly supports multi-gigabit delivery — which is rare in India as of writing. Check whether your ISP supplies an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) with a Gigabit LAN port, as this is the bottleneck before the router.
Step 4: India heat and router placement
Wi-Fi 7 routers generate more heat than older models due to more powerful radios. In Indian summer, a router placed inside a closed cabinet or entertainment unit will overheat and throttle its wireless performance or restart randomly. Place the router vertically in an open space, at least 30 cm from walls, and away from direct sunlight. If your laptop is the only device that drops connectivity while phones and other laptops stay connected, the fault is in the laptop — not the router. Causes include: a loose internal antenna cable (common after a drop), a failing Wi-Fi adapter chip, or a corrupted driver. Also check if the laptop's Wi-Fi 5 GHz band disappears entirely — often a driver issue on Windows 11.
