You are in the middle of a video call when the picture freezes, the sound breaks up and the Wi-Fi icon spins. A minute later it is back, then it drops again. If your workday in HITEC City includes several calls, this is more than annoying. This post helps you decide whether the fault sits in the network, in a setting on the laptop, or in the hardware, and what a safe order of checks looks like before you ask for help.
Why does my laptop Wi-Fi drop during video calls?
Short answer: video calls use steady data, so any small break shows up at once. The usual causes are a weak signal, an old or damaged driver (the small program that lets Windows talk to the Wi-Fi chip), a power-saving setting that switches the adapter off, or a failing adapter. Test another network first, then update the driver, then switch off adapter power saving. If all this fails, get the hardware checked. The example later in this post is a typical one, not a real customer.
Which checks should I do, in order?
- Try a phone hotspot. Connect the laptop to your phone's hotspot and make a short call. If it stays stable, the problem is the office or home network, not the laptop. Your network owner or provider is the right contact.
- Check another device. If your phone also drops on the same Wi-Fi, the router or the signal is at fault.
- Forget and rejoin. In Wi-Fi settings, choose the network, select Forget, and connect again with the password.
- Restart both. Restart the laptop and, if you control it, the router.
- Update the driver. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter and choose Update driver. The laptop maker's support page may offer a newer one for your exact model. Menu names can differ by Windows version.
- Turn off power saving. In Device Manager, open the adapter's properties, go to Power Management and untick the option that lets the computer turn the device off to save power. This setting sometimes appears under a different name.
- Switch bands. Many networks offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 5 GHz band is faster at close range; 2.4 GHz travels further. Try the other one.
Do not download driver tools from random websites. They can bring in unwanted software. Use the laptop maker's own support page or Windows Update.
How do I tell network, software and hardware apart?
What is different about working in HITEC City?
HITEC City is the densest IT zone in the city, and any busy office building can have crowded Wi-Fi at peak hours. Addresses around Cyber Towers or Mindspace need the exact building, reception instructions and a contact person, so a visit works best when you share these in advance. If your laptop is company-issued, check your employer's IT or asset policy first: many workplaces do not allow outside repair, and your IT desk may need to handle the network side anyway.
Remember also that a laptop carried in a bag every day gets knocked about, and the thin antenna cables that run behind the screen can loosen over time. That is one reason a laptop that drops Wi-Fi only after being moved should be looked at by a technician.
Back up important files before any driver reset or repair, since a rare failed update can leave Windows unstable.
Example: calls fine on the hotspot
Imagine a team member whose calls break up in the afternoons. On a phone hotspot the calls stay clear, so the laptop is fine. Their phone also stutters on the office Wi-Fi at that hour, which points to a crowded network. Switching to the 5 GHz band, moving closer to the access point and raising it with the IT desk solves it.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before a big call, join five minutes early and keep one backup ready, such as your phone hotspot. A wired adapter or dock with an Ethernet cable is the steadiest option if your desk has a network port. Save work before calls, because a sudden drop can also freeze apps.
