When would you use a phone hotspot for a laptop?
Short answer: A mobile hotspot turns your phone's cellular connection (4G LTE or 5G) into a Wi-Fi network your laptop connects to — exactly like a home router, but using mobile data. It is useful when your home broadband is down, you are working from a café without Wi-Fi, travelling, or dealing with a power cut that took the router down. How to set up your phone as a hotspot for a laptop
Step 1: Enable hotspot on Android or iPhone
On Android (Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Realme — India's most common brands): go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering (or Settings > Network > Hotspot depending on brand). Tap Mobile Hotspot, set a name and password, and turn it on. On iPhone: Settings > Personal Hotspot > toggle Allow Others to Join. Set a strong Wi-Fi password immediately — an open hotspot in a shared office or apartment building is a security risk. The network name defaults to your phone's name. Connect your laptop to this Wi-Fi network just as you would any other.
Step 2: Use USB tethering for faster, more stable connection
Wi-Fi hotspot is convenient, but USB tethering is faster and more stable — and it charges your phone while the laptop uses its data. Connect your phone to the laptop via its charging cable (USB-C or Lightning). On Android, go to Settings > Hotspot > USB Tethering and toggle it on. On iPhone, this happens automatically when you plug in and Personal Hotspot is enabled — Windows installs a driver the first time, then connects automatically. USB tethering typically delivers higher throughput than Wi-Fi hotspot because it avoids wireless overhead and band congestion.
Step 3: Mark the connection as Metered in Windows
This step is critical for preserving mobile data in India. A Windows laptop on a "non-metered" connection will download Windows Updates, OneDrive sync, app updates, and telemetry in the background — easily consuming 1–3 GB without you noticing. After connecting to your hotspot, open Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi, click your hotspot network name, scroll down, and turn on Metered connection. With this enabled, Windows defers most background downloads and you control data usage consciously.
Step 4: India-specific: Jio 5G and Airtel 5G hotspot performance
As of recent rollouts, Jio True 5G and Airtel 5G Plus cover most Tier-1 and Tier-2 Indian cities. A 5G phone on these networks can deliver 100–400 Mbps download speeds to a laptop — genuine broadband replacement for a WFH session. For best 5G hotspot performance, keep the phone near a window — 5G signals have shorter range than 4G and attenuate more through walls.
