Imagine a laptop that started in under a minute for months. After a Windows update it now shows a spinning circle for several minutes before the desktop appears. That is a very common first-time problem, and it has a short list of causes. This post takes you through them in the order a technician would: pending updates, startup apps, free space, a clean restart test, and finally the drive itself. You will be able to decide what to try at home, what to back up first, and when to ask for help.
Why is my laptop so slow to start after a Windows update?
Short answer: An update often leaves work behind: files still being installed, apps that now launch at start-up, or a drive with little free space left. Most of this settles by itself or can be cleared in minutes. If the slowness stays after two or three restarts, the storage drive (the part that holds Windows and your files) may be wearing out and needs testing.
Step 1: Let the update finish
Windows sometimes finishes installing during the first few restarts after an update. Keep the laptop plugged in, open Settings and look at Windows Update to see whether anything is still pending, then restart once more. Do not switch the laptop off by holding the power button during an update screen. Cutting power in the middle of an update can leave Windows unable to start and may put your files at risk. Our guide on a stuck Windows update covers what to do if the screen does not move at all.
Step 2: Trim the start-up list
Start-up apps are programs that open on their own when Windows loads. Right-click the taskbar, open Task Manager, and look for the Startup tab (the name can differ slightly by Windows version). Sort by 'Startup impact' and disable chat tools, game launchers and updaters you do not need straight away. Disabling only stops the auto-start; the app stays installed. Do not disable anything from your laptop maker's name that you do not recognise, such as a touchpad or power tool.
Step 3: Check free space
Open File Explorer, then 'This PC', and look at the main drive, usually named C. A drive that is nearly full slows everything because Windows needs working room. Try to keep roughly a fifth of it free; this is a rule of thumb, not a fixed figure. Move photos and videos to an external drive or cloud storage, and empty the Recycle Bin. A Windows update can leave large temporary files, and Settings has a storage cleanup option for them.
Step 4: Try a clean restart test
Choose Restart, not Shut down. Windows has a 'fast start-up' feature that saves part of the previous session so the laptop appears to start faster, and it can carry a problem from one session to the next. Our post on fast start-up pros and cons explains it. If a proper restart is faster than a shutdown and start, fast start-up is a likely cause.
Step 5: When the drive is the real cause
A drive that is failing may make the laptop freeze for seconds, show 100 percent disk use in Task Manager with nothing running, or report errors on start-up. The update did not cause this; it only made it visible because it is the first time the drive was worked hard. Do not run repeated repair tools on a drive you suspect is failing before your files are copied elsewhere. If you are unsure about backups, see our guide to recovering files after an update goes wrong.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before you book, write down the full model name, how long the start now takes, and what you changed. Copy your important files to an external drive or cloud folder first. A laptop that still opens is far easier to rescue than one that has stopped, so do not wait for the last stage.
