Why cable management matters for Indian WFH desks
Short answer: A clean cable setup reduces two real risks: foot-trip accidents that yank the laptop charger port (one of the most common damage causes we repair), and heat buildup from tightly bundled charger cables. It also genuinely saves time and frustration locating the right cable. What a complete cable management kit needs
Under-desk cable tray — the foundation
An under-desk cable tray (also called a cable raceway tray or wire basket) mounts below your desk surface and holds the power strip, excess cable length, and adapters off the floor. This is the single most impactful piece of cable management hardware you can buy. For Indian setups in rental flats — where drilling into furniture or walls is typically not an option — look for trays with clamp-style mounting rather than screw holes. These grip the desk edge mechanically and hold up to 3–5 kg of cables and power strips. Most come in 40–60cm lengths suitable for standard Indian study and computer desks.
Position the tray on the under-desk surface closest to the wall socket. The power strip lives in the tray, and all device chargers drop from the tray to the desk surface above via a single routed path. This eliminates the spider-web of cables on the floor and reduces the number of trips over loose cables.
Cable clips, sleeves, and spiral wrap
Adhesive cable clips are small plastic brackets with 3M adhesive backing that stick to desk surfaces, monitor stands, or wall edges. They guide individual cables along a fixed path and prevent cables from sliding off the desk. The most useful placement is along the rear edge of the desk surface, routing monitor/external display cables and the power strip feed in a single neat line. Choose clips rated for the cable diameter you are routing — a charger cable needs a wider clip (8–12mm) than a phone cable (4–6mm).
Cable sleeves are flexible neoprene or braided fabric tubes that bundle multiple cables running the same route (e.g., the run from desk to power strip on the floor). They are useful under the desk where multiple cables descend together. Spiral wrap (a helical plastic strip that winds around a bundle) is an alternative that allows adding or removing cables without cutting the sleeve open.

Power strip safety — an India-specific concern
The power strip (extension board) is part of the cable management system. In India, two specific risks apply. First, overloading: a 4-socket extension board with a laptop charger (65–140W), a monitor, a phone charger, and a desk light can draw 300–400W — well within a 5A rated strip. The issue arises when people daisy-chain two extension boards — this is a known fire and tripping risk. Use a single multi-socket strip rated for the total load, not a daisy-chain. Second, surge protection: an extension board with a built-in metal oxide varistor (MOV — the component that absorbs voltage spikes during power cuts) protects laptops from the power-surge damage that causes IC failures. Cable protectors for charger longevity
The most common cable failure point we see at our workshop is fraying at the connector end — specifically where the cable meets the plug. A spring-style or silicone cable protector slides over the connector and distributes bending stress over a longer length instead of concentrating it at the crimp point. These cost ₹50–₹200 per unit and are worth adding to every charger connector. If your charger cable is already fraying at the connector, do not use tape as a fix — replace the charger. A shorted cable creates a risk at the laptop's DC jack (the charging socket on the laptop body) and can fry the charging circuit.
