Why the Indian monsoon is your laptop’s hardest season
Short answer: India’s monsoon months (June through September) push ambient humidity in coastal and peninsular cities to 80–95% relative humidity (RH). At those levels, microscopic moisture condenses on cold metal surfaces inside the laptop — the motherboard traces, RAM slot contacts, and SSD connector pads — even when you never go near a puddle. That moisture causes oxidation and intermittent failures that often appear weeks after the rains end, making the connection to monsoon damage easy to miss.
The 4-step monsoon laptop care routine
Step 1: Pre-monsoon prep — do this in late May or early June
Before the first heavy rains arrive, spend 15 minutes on prevention. Clean the keyboard and display with a dry microfibre cloth to remove salt residue from sweat — salt is hygroscopic (it draws moisture from the air) and accelerates corrosion when humidity rises. Check your laptop bag: squeeze it gently; if you feel air escaping through the seams, the waterproofing has aged. Drop two or three silica gel packets (the small white sachets that come in new shoe boxes) into the main compartment of your bag. They absorb up to 30–40% of their weight in moisture and cost almost nothing to replace. Step 2: Daily habits during the rainy season
If you commute with your laptop, keep it in a hard-shell sleeve or a bag with a dedicated rain cover. Even a short 5-minute walk in heavy rain is enough for water to wick through a standard neoprene sleeve. When you arrive at your desk, let the bag dry open for 10 minutes before pulling out the laptop — trapped moisture in the bag transfers to the device once it is enclosed. Avoid placing the laptop on a cool tiled or marble surface immediately after coming in from the rain; the temperature difference causes condensation on the base panel. A thin rubber mat or a book between the laptop and the desk surface breaks that thermal contact.
Step 3: What to do if the laptop actually gets wet
If rain water gets into the laptop — a bag failure, a dropped water bottle, anything — the sequence matters more than speed. Power off immediately using the power button; do not wait for the OS to shut down normally. Unplug the charger. Tilt the laptop keyboard-side down at 45 degrees so gravity pulls water toward the opening and away from the motherboard. Wipe visible surface water with a lint-free cloth. Place the closed laptop in a zip-lock bag with three or four silica gel packets for at least 24 hours. Do not use a hairdryer — heat can delaminate the display panel adhesive. After 24 hours, bring it to a repair engineer for a safe power-on check before you use it yourself. Step 4: The India angle — monsoon-specific damage patterns
India’s monsoon creates two damage patterns that engineers in drier climates rarely see. The first is flash-surge damage: power outages during storms are common, and when electricity returns after a cut, the initial voltage can spike for a fraction of a second — enough to blow a protection fuse on the motherboard or damage the power-management IC (the chip that regulates charging). A basic surge protector at the wall prevents this entirely. The second pattern is fungal growth in keyboard assemblies. In cities with sustained monsoon humidity — Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi — the foam backing under keyboard keycaps can develop mould, causing keys to feel spongy and eventually fail. If you notice musty-smelling keys after monsoon season, a keyboard replacement is cheaper than trying to clean mould from inside the assembly.

Stop and call a professional if: the laptop fails to turn on after the 24-hour dry period; you can smell anything metallic or burning; the display shows vertical lines or discolouration (moisture on the display cable connector); keys feel sticky or some stop registering; the fan makes a grinding noise (moisture-induced bearing corrosion).
