This is for anyone working on an Intel MacBook, iMac or Mac mini, such as a freelance video editor in Kochi who relies on one machine for paid projects and has just seen macOS 27 launch. You will learn what the news means for you, how to check your Mac, and a monthly routine that keeps it updated and your project files safe without buying anything.
How do I keep an Intel Mac updated now that macOS 27 is out?
Short answer: Stay on macOS 26 Tahoe and keep it fully updated. macOS 27 only runs on Apple silicon Macs, so it will not be offered to an Intel Mac. Once a month, open System Settings, General, Software Update, install what appears, restart, and back up with Time Machine (the Mac's built-in backup tool). That is the whole routine.
What changed with macOS 27?
Apple released macOS 27, called Golden Gate, on 14 September 2026. It is Apple silicon only. Apple silicon means the Apple-made M-series chips used in newer Macs, as opposed to the older Intel chips. Apple's macOS 26 Tahoe, released on 15 September 2025, is the last macOS for Intel Macs. Its latest update at the time of writing is 26.7, dated 14 September 2026.
As MacRumors reported, the Macs that macOS 27 leaves behind are the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four ports, the 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2019 Mac Pro. Tahoe itself had already dropped some older Intel models, so not every Intel Mac can run it. Apple decides how long Tahoe keeps receiving updates, so check Apple's support pages from time to time.
Which macOS is my Mac on?
- Click the Apple menu at the top left and choose About This Mac.
- Note the model name and year, and the processor line. It will say Intel if it is an Intel Mac.
- Note the macOS name and version underneath.
The monthly routine
Week one: update
Open System Settings, then General, then Software Update. Install the macOS update and any app updates. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Keep the charger connected, since the Mac restarts more than once.
Same day: back up
Run Time Machine to an external drive. Our guide on keeping Time Machine backups fast and reliable covers the setup. Never update a Mac that holds client footage without a fresh backup.
Before each update: check your tools
Editing software, plug-ins and audio interfaces sometimes lag behind a new macOS release. Read the maker's support note for your version before updating. If a project is due this week, delay the update until it is delivered.
Keep the drive breathing
Do not let the internal drive fill up completely before an update. Leave at least a fifth of the storage free where possible. A full drive slows a Mac and makes updates fail. Move finished projects to an external drive and confirm the copy opens before deleting anything.
Monsoon humidity, voltage dips and big downloads
Humid coastal cities such as Kochi, Chennai and Mumbai are hard on laptop ports and fans during the monsoon months. Keep the Mac in a dry spot, never in a damp bag, and let it cool before closing the lid on a long export. Voltage dips can happen, so use a surge-protected extension board for the charger. Large macOS downloads can stall on weak broadband, so start them on a steady connection. Intel MacBooks can be sent to us by courier from anywhere in India.
A typical case
What follows is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees, not one named customer. A freelance editor on a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro sees news of macOS 27 and worries the machine is finished. It is not. It keeps working on Tahoe. The real risks are an unbacked-up drive and a nearly full SSD. Once the files are backed up and storage is cleared, the Mac runs as before.
When to get help
- Software Update keeps failing or the Mac restarts without finishing.
- The Mac shows a folder with a question mark, a spinning wheel that never ends, or restarts by itself.
- The battery swells, the case bulges, or the fans run loudly even when idle.
- You cannot back up because the internal drive shows errors.
Please do not try third-party installers. See our Apple MacBook repair page, and for slowdowns read our spinning beachball guide. In Hyderabad we offer a doorstep service for a visit fee of ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
An Intel Mac is not out of date the day a new macOS arrives. What shortens its life is neglect: no backup, a full drive and dust in the fans. Spend ten minutes a month on updates and one backup, keep a second copy of live projects, and plan a replacement when your work needs it, not when the news does.
