You are retired, your Mac has served you well for years, and a relative says it is now too old. This guide is for you and for anyone using an Intel MacBook, iMac or Mac mini for email, banking, photos and letters. You will learn how to check what chip your Mac has, what the macOS 27 change really means, and how to decide calmly whether to keep it or replace it.
Should I replace my Intel Mac now that macOS 27 is out?
Short answer: Not automatically. macOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, is Apple silicon only, and macOS 26 Tahoe is the last version for Intel Macs. Your Mac keeps working on Tahoe. What changes is that it will not receive new macOS versions. Keep it while it does your work and still gets updates, and plan a replacement before it becomes a risk.
How do I check whether my Mac is Intel?
- Click the Apple symbol at the top left of the screen and choose About This Mac.
- Look for the line called Chip or Processor. If it says Apple M1, M2, M3 or similar, your Mac has Apple silicon. If it says Intel Core, it is an Intel Mac.
- Note the model name and year shown there. You may need them later when you ask a shop or Apple for advice.
What exactly changed with macOS 27?
macOS 27 is Apple silicon only. Apple's list for macOS 27 drops the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four ports, the 2020 27-inch iMac and the 2019 Mac Pro. These were the last Intel Macs that could still install the previous version. Earlier Intel models had already been left behind by macOS 26 Tahoe.
Some macOS 27 Siri features also need an M3 chip or newer and 12 GB of memory, so even among newer Macs not every feature runs everywhere.
Is my Intel Mac still safe to use?
It is safe in the ordinary sense for now, because Tahoe is the current version for Intel Macs and Software Update still applies. Apple's security updates page shows what Tahoe still receives, so do not trust anyone who gives you an exact end date. Open System Settings, then General, then Software Update (the wording can differ slightly between versions) and switch on automatic updates. Never install a Mac update because a phone caller or a pop-up on a website tells you to; only use Software Update inside the Mac.
Also remember that other makers decide separately how long they support an older macOS. Your browser, your accounting software or your printer driver may ask for a newer version one day. When one of them does, that is the real signal to replace.
When does replacing make sense?
- An app you must use, such as a banking tool, tax software or a printer program, no longer supports your macOS version.
- The battery lasts under an hour or the case has swollen. See our MacBook care checklist for what healthy looks like.
- The storage is nearly full and slow, and the repair would cost close to a new Mac.
- You want features that macOS 27 brings, and you accept the cost.
If you decide to buy, Apple raised its India prices in late June 2026. At the Apple India store the MacBook Neo, Apple's low-cost MacBook, now starts at ₹79,900 for 256 GB. At launch it was ₹69,900. Confirm today's price on Apple's page, because prices move.
Dust, damp and power cuts for an older Mac
An older Mac in an Indian home faces dust, heat and the damp monsoon months, which wear fans, batteries and ports faster. Blow dust gently from the vents, keep the Mac off beds and sofas, and use a surge-protected socket because voltage dips and power cuts can happen. If you do replace it, do not sell or hand the old Mac away until you have copied your photos and documents and signed out of your Apple ID.
Before you decide, back up

When to get help
- The Mac will not start, or restarts again and again.
- It becomes very hot, or the fan is loud all the time.
- The battery is swollen or drains in minutes.
- You cannot reach your photos and need them back.
