A civil engineer, aged 34, in Maisammaguda, finds her HP Pavilion 15 charges only when the cable is held at an angle. This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees, not a record of one real customer. If your laptop behaves the same way, you will learn the safe checks to do at home, what a technician looks at, how a DC jack replacement goes, and when to stop trying and ask for help.
Why does my HP Pavilion 15 charge only when the cable is held at an angle?
Short answer: The charging socket inside the laptop (the DC jack) has often loosened, or the pin in the adapter plug is worn or bent, so the contact only connects at one angle. Test with a matching adapter to see which part is at fault. If the same laptop does the same with a second adapter, the socket is the likely cause, and it needs to be replaced rather than coaxed.
A typical case at the bench
The laptop belongs to a civil engineer in Maisammaguda. She uses it daily for drawings and site reports. For weeks it has charged only if the plug is pushed slightly upward, and the battery light flickers when she types on the desk. She books a doorstep visit through our page on laptop repair in Maisammaguda.
Step 1: the checks she can do herself
- Try another adapter. Use one with the same voltage and plug size as the original. If the laptop charges normally, the first adapter or its cable is the problem.
- Look at the plug. The centre pin of a round plug should be straight and clean. A burn mark, a bend or a cable kink near the plug points to the adapter.
- Look into the socket with a torch. Dust or lint in the socket can stop the plug sitting fully. Do not poke metal objects into the socket while the laptop is plugged in or on.
- Check for wobble. With the laptop off and unplugged, gently touch the plug in place. If the socket moves with it, the socket has loosened from the board.
Our guides to cleaning a laptop charging port and the loose laptop DC jack go into these checks further.
Step 2: what the bench tests show
A technician measures the adapter's output with a meter to confirm it delivers the right voltage. Then the laptop is opened and the battery disconnected. The socket is checked for movement, and its solder joints (the small metal connections holding it to the board) are inspected for cracks. A ring-shaped crack around a pin is a typical sign that repeated wiggling has worn the joint.
Step 3: the DC jack replacement
In this case the socket was loose and two joints were cracked. The usual repair is to remove the old socket, clean the board, fit a new socket and solder it carefully. Depending on the model, the socket is either soldered to the main board or sits on a small separate board joined by a cable. We confirm which type yours is after opening it, so the quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for approval before any work. Afterwards the laptop is tested charging at several plug angles and under load.
What if the charging socket is damaged but the board is fine?
In many cases the jack alone is replaced and the board stays. If the socket has been loose for a long time, a technician also checks the nearby tracks and the charging circuit. Charging problems that continue after a new socket mean a board-level fault, and that needs a different repair. Our HP Pavilion common issues post is a useful list of other faults to rule out.
Carry-in and monsoon care for your laptop
In Hyderabad, as in many cities, humidity in the monsoon months can corrode contacts, and a cable crushed in a bag is a frequent cause of a bent pin. When you carry a laptop in or hand it over for a visit, remove the adapter and bring only what is asked, wrap the laptop in padding, and keep the box dry. Take a backup before it travels.
When to get help
- the plug feels loose, hot or sparks;
- charging stops and starts as you type;
- the socket moves when touched;
- you smell burning, or the laptop dims when the plug shifts.
Our HP DC jack replacement page and HP hub cover this job. Hyderabad owners can use doorstep service through our HP service page for Secunderabad, or you can carry the laptop in to our MG Road, Secunderabad store. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. A laptop still under HP's warranty should go to HP's authorised service first; we repair laptops out of warranty or when the owner chooses independent repair.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Treat the first week of a loose plug as a warning, not a habit. Hold the cable straight, do not tug it, and keep the laptop away from where people trip over the cord. A socket repaired early is a small job. A socket left to wobble for months can take the board with it.
