This post is for anyone who owns an HP laptop, such as a Pavilion, Victus, Envy, Spectre or OmniBook, running Windows 11 version 24H2. You will learn what end of updates means in plain words, how to read your version in a few seconds, and how to move to a newer version without losing files. It applies to Home and Pro editions. Work or school laptops may follow different rules, so ask your IT team.
What does end of updates mean for Windows 11 24H2 on an HP laptop?
Short answer: Microsoft's release health page lists Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro as End of updates on 13 October 2026. Your HP laptop will keep starting and running, but it stops receiving monthly security and bug-fix updates. To keep getting them, move to Windows 11 25H2 or 26H2 after saving your files.
How do I check which version my HP laptop has?
- Press the Windows key and R together.
- Type winver and press Enter.
- Read the line that says Version. It shows 24H2, 25H2 or 26H2.
You can also open Settings, then System, then About. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Look under Windows specifications.
Which versions are still supported?
Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 continue to 12 October 2027, according to the same page. If your HP is a company laptop, that may be your case. Microsoft can change these pages, so check today's status on Microsoft's release health page.
How do I move my HP laptop to a newer version?
1. Back up first
Copy documents, photos, and work files to an external drive or cloud storage. See our guide to backing up before the 26H2 upgrade. A power cut or a failed update can make files hard to reach, so never skip this step.
2. Check free space and power
Keep plenty of free space on the C drive; a few GB at the very least, and more is safer. Plug in the charger. Close other programs.
3. Run Windows Update
Open Settings, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If a newer version is offered, choose Download and install. The laptop restarts a few times. Do not switch it off while it says Working on updates.
4. Update HP drivers if something misbehaves
If the touchpad, Wi-Fi or sound stops working afterwards, look for drivers for your model on HP's support site, and check Windows Update history for any failed items.
Power cuts and patchy broadband during big updates
Depending on the version, a feature update can be a large download, and the install takes a while. In areas with voltage dips or unstable broadband, start the upgrade only when the power is steady and the connection is reliable. A laptop with a weak battery is at more risk. If your battery drops quickly, a UPS (a small battery backup box) helps. A download that keeps failing is a reason to ask a technician to do it for you.
What if the update will not install?
Some HP laptops are several years old, and their storage may be nearly full or their battery weak. Both make a big update more likely to stall. Free up space by moving old videos and downloads to an external drive, and restart once before trying again.
Common causes include low disk space, an old driver, damaged system files, or a failing drive. A repeated error code is worth noting down. Our BIOS update checklist is a good model for preparing the laptop even when the update is Windows only.
Why should I not ignore end of updates?
Without monthly updates, newly found security problems in Windows are not fixed on that laptop. For a machine used for banking, office work or children's online classes, that is a good reason to move. Nothing stopped working on 13 October 2026 itself, so you can take a day to prepare properly.
When to get help
- Windows Update fails again after a restart.
- The laptop loops on restart or shows a blue screen after the update.
- You see a BitLocker (Windows' built-in drive lock) recovery screen and do not have the key.
- Your files are not backed up and the laptop is acting oddly.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
An update-ended laptop is not an emergency, but it is a reason to act soon rather than leave it for next year. Save your files, run the upgrade on a steady power supply, and note your version after it finishes. If anything feels uncertain, message us before you start, not after.
