Why Copilot+ PCs run out of space faster
Short answer: Copilot+ PCs reserve more system storage than previous Windows laptops because of three AI and update-related features: the Recall snapshot vault (up to 150 GB), Windows Reserved Storage (7 GB guaranteed for updates), and the WinSxS component store (which grows by 1–3 GB per cumulative update). On a 256 GB entry-level Copilot+ machine, all three together can consume 60–80 GB before you save a single file.
Step-by-step disk space recovery on Windows 11 Copilot+ PC
Step 1: Cut Recall snapshot storage
This is the single biggest win. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Recall & snapshots. Under Storage allocated for snapshots, drag the slider to the minimum (currently 25 GB on a 256 GB drive). If you do not use Recall at all, click Delete all snapshots to reclaim the full allocation immediately, then toggle Save snapshots off. This alone frees 25–150 GB depending on your drive and how long Recall has been running.
Step 2: Run Storage Sense
Open Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense and toggle it on. Set Run Storage Sense to “During low free disk space.” Below that, enable Delete temporary files that my apps aren’t using and set Delete files in my recycle bin to “30 days.” Click Run Storage Sense now. On a typical Copilot+ machine after a few months of use, this usually recovers 2–5 GB of temporary files, browser caches, and orphaned update remnants. It does not touch your documents or installed apps.
Step 3: Clean the WinSxS component store
The WinSxS folder (short for Windows Side-by-Side) stores backup copies of every Windows Update component so you can roll back updates. Over time it can grow to 15–25 GB. To safely compact it, open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup. This removes components that have been superseded by newer updates. The process takes 10–20 minutes and requires a restart. It typically frees 2–8 GB and is fully supported by Microsoft.
Step 4: Manage Reserved Storage and system restore points
Go to Settings → System → Storage → Advanced Storage Settings → Reserved Storage. You can toggle this off; Windows will warn you that updates may fail if disk space is critically low. Re-enable it before running major feature updates. System Restore points are another large consumer: open Create a restore point from the Start menu search, click Configure on your C: drive, and reduce Max Usage to 5% of total drive space. Delete all existing restore points if you are confident the system is stable, then let a fresh one be created after the next clean boot.
Step 5: The India context — when storage fills up fast
Indian users often have slower home broadband speeds which cause Windows Update to cache large download files that do not get cleaned up automatically. If your C: drive fills suddenly, check Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options → Delivery Optimization → Activity Monitor. The cache cap under Advanced Options → Percentage of disk to use for local caching may be set to 25% or higher — reduce it to 5%. Also check OneDrive sync: if Files On-Demand is off, OneDrive downloads everything locally and can silently consume tens of gigabytes.

If running all the above steps still leaves less than 10 GB free on a 256 GB drive, the drive may be undersized for a Copilot+ PC workload. The minimum spec for a Copilot+ PC that will not feel storage-cramped is a 512 GB drive. If you are buying new, do not accept a 256 GB option unless you intend to keep cloud storage and disable Recall.
