What is Windows 11 24H2 Recall — and should you enable it?
Short answer: Recall is an AI-powered search feature that takes periodic screenshots of your screen and indexes them locally using the laptop’s NPU (Neural Processing Unit — a dedicated chip for AI tasks). You can then search your activity history in plain English. It works entirely on-device, stores snapshots in an encrypted vault on your own SSD, and can be paused or fully disabled. If your laptop qualifies, enabling it is low-risk when done correctly.
How to check if your laptop supports Recall
Step 1: Verify you have a Copilot+ certified PC
Open Settings → System → About and look for the Copilot+ PC badge. If it is not there, your laptop’s NPU does not meet the 40 TOPS threshold and Recall is not available. Qualifying chips include Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, Snapdragon X Plus, Intel Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake), and AMD Ryzen AI 300 series — all launched from late 2024 onward. Older Intel 12th-gen or 13th-gen machines, even powerful ones, do not qualify.
Step 2: Confirm Windows 11 24H2 is installed
Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history. The feature update line should read Windows 11 Version 24H2. If it shows 23H2 or earlier, run Windows Update and wait for the 24H2 upgrade. On Snapdragon X machines, the update is typically pushed automatically within a few weeks of purchase. Do not try to force Recall on an older Windows version — unofficial workarounds corrupt the snapshot database.
Step 3: Enable TPM 2.0 and Windows Hello
Recall uses Windows Hello (PIN, fingerprint, or face ID) to authenticate before showing any snapshots. If Windows Hello is not set up, Recall will refuse to start. Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options and add at least a PIN. While you are there, verify TPM 2.0 is active: press Win + R, type tpm.msc, and confirm the status reads The TPM is ready for use. If it says TPM not found, go into your BIOS (usually F2 or Del at boot) and enable the Security Chip or PTT option.
Step 4: Switch on Recall and configure storage limits
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Recall & snapshots. Toggle Save snapshots to on. By default, Recall reserves 25–150 GB of SSD space depending on drive size. Indian professionals using banking, trading, or UPI apps may want to add those apps to the Filter apps list so their screens are never captured. You can also add websites to a filter list in the Recall panel inside the Start menu. Pausing Recall for an hour is possible from the system tray icon.
Step 5: The India context — data and power considerations
Two questions come up repeatedly from Indian users. First, is my banking data safe? Recall does capture banking app screens by default; add your bank app and UPI app to the filter list in step 4. Second, does Recall affect battery life? On Snapdragon X laptops, the NPU handles Recall indexing at very low power — Microsoft reports under 3% battery impact in benchmarks. On Intel Core Ultra 200V machines the impact is similar. The indexing pauses automatically when the laptop is on battery below 20%, which is a sensible default for India’s unpredictable power supply.
When to call a laptop repair service for Recall-related issues
When DIY ends
If Recall shows a hardware not supported error on a laptop that should qualify, the NPU driver may need reinstallation — a straightforward software fix. If the error persists after a driver update, the NPU itself may have a firmware problem requiring a motherboard-level diagnostic. For Snapdragon X laptops with persistent Recall failures after the correct Windows build is confirmed, contact us before attempting a factory reset.
Typical repair cost in India
NPU driver reinstallation or Windows OS troubleshooting: ₹500–₹1,500. If the NPU is confirmed faulty at hardware level on a Copilot+ machine (rare but seen post-liquid-damage), motherboard replacement ranges from ₹12,000–₹30,000 depending on model. Doorstep OS diagnosis in Hyderabad starts at ₹149.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Recall is genuinely useful once the filter list is configured. The privacy concerns from its 2024 debut were valid — early builds stored snapshots unencrypted. The shipping version in 24H2 encrypts the vault with Device Encryption tied to your Windows Hello credential, so a thief with your hard drive cannot read it. Set the filter list first, then enable it. The feature is worth the five minutes of setup.
