Picture a hotel receptionist in Masab Tank, 52 (a typical scenario, not a real customer), whose Dell Vostro 3510 has started missing keys. The E, the spacebar and then half a row stop responding, and the front desk cannot wait. She has been given a verbal figure but nothing in writing. This post explains what a fair written quote for a keyboard fault should list, how Dell describes its paid repair route, how to compare an independent quote like for like, and when the brand route is the better choice.
What should you check before approving a keyboard quote?
Short answer: ask for the quote in writing and check five lines: the exact part, whether it is the keyboard alone or the larger top-case assembly, the labour, GST with any visit fee, and what happens if another fault is found. Use Dell first if the laptop is in warranty or covered by a Dell plan. If not, compare two written quotes line by line before you approve either.
Why do keys stop working?
Keys can stop for simple reasons. Crumbs or dirt may sit under a key. A liquid spill may have reached the keyboard's thin circuit sheet. The flat cable that links the keyboard to the board may have loosened. Sometimes the fault is in the board itself, or a software setting disables a block of keys. A technician should test before suggesting a new part, because a loose cable may need no new part at all. If liquid caused the fault, the keyboard may not be the only damaged part, so the quote should say so. Our guide on Dell keys not working explains the common causes.
What does Dell's paid route involve?
Dell's India support article says an out-of-warranty repair is arranged mainly online through Dell Support: you enter the Service Tag (the code printed on the laptop) and pick a paid service option. For hardware, Dell describes a Hardware Diagnostics step in which Dell sends a box and a shipping label, generally within one to two business days after the service is booked. Dell diagnoses the laptop and gives you the repair details and cost first, and it states that paid repair work is completed only after the quote is approved and payment is completed. The diagnostics fee is stated as nonrefundable whether or not you approve the repair, and a Collect and Return option exists in some regions. Read the article on how to arrange an out-of-warranty repair on a Dell system, checked on 19 October 2026, and check whether your region and model qualify.
What can an independent repair offer?
Laptop Repair World has worked since 2007 from one store at MG Road, Secunderabad. Our Dell keyboard replacement service starts with a test of the keyboard, the cable and the board. Our written quotation lists parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work. If testing finds another fault, we send a revised quotation and wait for your approval before any further paid work. Each part is named as original, compatible or refurbished, with its own warranty, and a 30-day repair warranty applies, subject to its terms. On a keyboard job, we also clean the accessible keyboard area at no extra charge.
For a doorstep visit in Masab Tank (laptop repair in Masab Tank), there is a ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. No Fix No Fee covers the repair charge, and the visit fee is waived only when you approve the repair. You can also carry the laptop to our MG Road, Secunderabad store; we record the condition, serial number and accessories when the laptop is collected.
How do you compare two quotes like for like?
Ask one more thing of every quote: is it for the keyboard alone, or for the top case (the keyboard together with the palm-rest panel it is fitted into)? On some laptops these are separate parts, so ask which one the quote covers. Do not guess from the total. The exact price of either comes only after diagnosis, so no figure is quoted here; our guide to Dell keyboard replacement cost explains what moves it.
What does a keyboard quote comparison look like?
For example, a Vostro's keys fail after a cup of tea is knocked over. One quote reads only 'keyboard repair, one amount'. Another lists the keyboard part, its type, labour, GST, a line saying liquid cleaning is separate work, and a promise of a revised quote if the board is affected. The second quote is easier to compare and easier to challenge.
How do dust, humidity and power cuts in India affect a front-desk laptop?
A laptop that runs all day on a hotel or shop counter meets dust, humid air in the monsoon and the occasional spill from a nearby tea or water glass. Humidity can corrode the contacts under the keyboard. Power cuts and surges stress the charger and the board. Back up your guest records and files before any repair, because a keyboard job should not touch your data, but any open laptop carries some risk. Our backup guide shows the steps.
When is Dell the better route?
- The laptop is within warranty, or a Dell plan that covers the fault is active.
- You prefer one organisation for the diagnosis and the repair.
- The Collect and Return option is offered in your region and suits you.
An independent repair is worth comparing when the warranty has ended or when you want the keyboard fault assessed at your door. See our Dell service centre and independent repair comparison, the Dell Vostro repair page and our Dell service in Hyderabad page.
When to get help
- A whole row of keys, or the spacebar, has stopped.
- Keys type on their own or repeat characters.
- A spill reached the keyboard.
- You were given a figure with no written breakdown.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before you approve anything, ask three questions: Is it the keyboard alone or the top case? Which type of part is it? What happens if you find another fault? Write the answers on the quote or in a message. If the quote cannot answer them, pause before approving it.
