This guide is for owners of a Dell G-series or Alienware gaming laptop, and anyone with a Dell that has an NVIDIA graphics card. In a few minutes you will be able to read the exact graphics driver version installed on your laptop, compare it with the versions Dell lists as fixed, and install the right driver from Dell's own support site. You do not need to be technical, and you do not need to install extra software.
How do I check my NVIDIA driver version on a Dell?
Short answer: Right-click the Start button, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, double-click your NVIDIA card, and open the Driver tab. The Driver Version line is the number to compare with Dell's advisory DSA-2026-169. If it is lower than the fixed version for your GPU, install the newer driver from Dell Support using your Service Tag.
What does Dell advisory DSA-2026-169 say?
Dell published DSA-2026-169, titled as a security update for NVIDIA GPU display driver vulnerabilities, on 20 May 2026 and revised it on 18 September 2026. Dell rates the impact High. The advisory page shows no CVSS score (the scoring number security teams use), so we do not quote one.
It covers Alienware, Dell G15 and G16, Latitude, Precision, OptiPlex, Inspiron and Dell Pro Max. A security advisory means the maker has found problems that a fixed driver closes. It does not mean your laptop is badly built, and you do not need to stop using it. It means you should update the driver.
The fixed driver depends on the graphics chip (GPU). Dell lists these versions: 32.0.15.9608 or later is the most common, and the others are 32.0.15.9595, 32.0.16.1060 and 32.0.15.8242. Which number applies to which GPU is shown in Dell's own table, so open the Dell advisory DSA-2026-169 and find your model. Dell may have revised it again since 18 September 2026, so read the revision history at the bottom for today's position.
Step by step: read the installed driver version
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Click the arrow beside Display adapters. A gaming laptop often shows two entries: an Intel or AMD one for everyday use and an NVIDIA GeForce or RTX one for games.
- Double-click the NVIDIA entry and open the Driver tab.
- Note the Driver Version, for example in the form 32.0.15.xxxx. The wording can differ slightly between Windows versions.
- Note your exact GPU name from the same window, such as GeForce RTX followed by a number.
The number NVIDIA shows in its own app is shorter and looks different. Use the long Device Manager number when you compare with Dell's table.
How do I install the right driver?
Use your Service Tag
The Service Tag is a 7-character code on a sticker under the laptop, and also shown in the Dell SupportAssist window or by typing it into the Start menu search as System Information. On Dell's support site, choose Drivers and Downloads, enter the Service Tag, and pick the Video category. Dell then lists only the drivers made for your model.
Install and restart
Download the NVIDIA driver, run it, and restart when asked. After the restart, open Device Manager again and confirm the version now matches or is higher than the fixed version for your GPU. If an older driver comes back after a Windows update, repeat the check.

Power cuts and driver installs on a gaming Dell
A graphics driver install blanks the screen for a few seconds and can take several minutes. A power cut or voltage dip at that moment can leave Windows with a half-installed driver and a black or flickering screen. Keep the charger plugged in, and do not close the lid or hold the power button while the install is running. Gaming laptops that run hot in summer should be on a hard, flat surface so the fans can breathe, as heat adds to the strain during long installs. Our note on why G-series and Alienware laptops run hot has the cooling basics.
When to get help
Ask a technician if you see any of these:
- The screen stays black, flickers or shows stripes after a driver install.
- Device Manager shows a yellow warning mark beside the NVIDIA card, or the card is missing.
- Windows keeps replacing the new driver with an older one.
- The laptop shuts down or restarts while gaming.
A Dell laptop still under warranty should go to Dell's authorised service first. A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before any driver change, write down your current version and copy your important files to an external drive. If the new driver causes trouble, you will know exactly what to go back to. And always take the driver from Dell Support: it is tested for your exact model.
