This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees. A chartered accountant in Padmarao Nagar, 44, works on a Dell Latitude through filing season. Lately the cursor wanders across the screen, opens files and types into the wrong cell, with no hand on the touchpad. This post shows the checks in order, what Dell says about the BIOS (the small program that starts the laptop before Windows loads), and how to tell when the touchpad itself needs replacing.
Why does my Dell Latitude cursor move by itself?
Short answer: The touchpad is sending touch signals that you did not make. The cause can be dirt or moisture on the pad, a connected mouse or accessory, a software setting, a BIOS issue on some older models, or a worn touchpad. Work from the simple checks to the harder ones, and keep a backup of your files.
The bench case in brief
The accountant's Latitude started drifting after a day of heavy use. The owner had tried restarting and a new mouse driver. Nothing changed. On the bench the first step was not to open the laptop. It was to test the touchpad in three places: inside Windows, inside the BIOS setup screen, and with the lid closed and reopened.
Step-by-step checks before any repair
1. Clean and dry the pad
Switch the laptop off. Wipe the touchpad with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth and let it dry fully. Oily fingers, sweat, and a film of humidity in the monsoon months can make a pad read touches that are not there.
2. Remove everything connected
Unplug USB mice, docks, and adapters. A faulty wireless mouse receiver can also move the cursor. If the drift stops, add the items back one at a time.
3. Look at the touchpad settings
Open Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Touchpad. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Turn the touchpad sensitivity down one step and test again. Also check Device Manager for a yellow warning mark on the touchpad entry.
4. Test inside the BIOS screen
Restart and press F2 repeatedly as the Dell logo appears (the key can differ on some models). If the cursor still moves in the BIOS screen, Windows and its drivers are not the cause. The problem is in the BIOS or the hardware.
What Dell says about the lid and the power button
Dell has a support article on touchpad ghost touch (cursor moves on its own). It was last updated on 20 May 2026. It describes the cursor moving when the laptop is started from the palm-rest power button and the lid is then closed. This is background for older models, not a current alert. Dell lists a BIOS fix as follows:
If your Latitude is a different model, do not assume this applies. Open Dell's support page for your service tag (the short code printed on the underside label) and read the BIOS release notes there. Today's list may differ from the table above.
How to check and update the BIOS safely
- Press the Windows key, type System Information, and read the line BIOS Version/Date.
- Compare it with the version on Dell's support page for your model.
- If yours is older, download the BIOS file from Dell for your exact model only.
- Back up your files first. Our BIOS update backup checklist lists what to save.
- Keep the charger connected and run the update.
Do not switch the laptop off while the BIOS update is running. A broken update can leave the laptop unable to start.
Power cuts and BIOS updates
Voltage dips and power cuts are common enough in many Hyderabad neighbourhoods that a BIOS update is best done when the supply is steady. A battery in good health gives some protection, and a UPS (a small battery backup box) adds more. Do not start an update during a storm or when the lights have been flickering.
When the touchpad itself is at fault
If the cursor still moves in the BIOS screen after a cleaning, with nothing connected and the BIOS up to date, the touchpad module is the likely culprit. Signs include a pad that clicks by itself, a raised or swollen palm-rest area, or random drift only when the base is pressed. A swollen battery under the palm rest can push on the pad. If the palm rest looks bulged, stop using the laptop and have it checked.
In our accountant's case the BIOS was already current, and the drift continued in the BIOS screen, so the touchpad module was the next thing to replace. Once a technician has diagnosed it, the exact quote for such a job comes after diagnosis and is shared for approval before any work.
When to get help
- The cursor moves in the BIOS screen too.
- The palm rest is bulging or the lid does not sit flat.
- You are not comfortable running a BIOS update yourself.
- The laptop is still under Dell warranty. In that case take it to Dell's authorised service first.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Do the simple checks first: clean, unplug, test in the BIOS screen. They cost nothing and tell a technician exactly where to look. Write down the BIOS version and the service tag before you call us. If files matter, copy them to a drive before anything else is done. See also our backup before repair guide.
