If you use a Dell laptop for school work, accounts or home use, and updates feel like a job for a technician, this post is for you. It is written the way we would explain it across the counter to a school principal in Coimbatore who wants a safe, simple habit. You will learn what Dell Command Update does, a calm monthly routine you can follow at your own pace, and the two small checks to make before any BIOS update.
How do I keep Dell drivers and BIOS current with Dell Command Update?
Short answer: Once a month, open Dell Command Update, let it scan, and read each item it lists. Install the driver updates first. Install the BIOS update last, with the charger connected, after backing up your files and noting your BitLocker recovery key. Restart when asked and let the laptop finish on its own.
What is Dell Command Update?
Dell Command Update is a Dell program that checks your laptop against Dell's own list and shows the updates made for your model. Drivers are small programs that let Windows talk to parts such as Wi-Fi, graphics, audio and the touchpad. The BIOS is the small program that starts the laptop before Windows loads. Dell publishes the tool on its support site, and its download page lists which models it supports. Some Inspiron and Vostro owners will find Dell's SupportAssist app does a similar job. Both are Dell's own tools, a safer choice than random driver websites.
Always download it from Dell's support site, not from a link in an email or an advertisement.
The monthly routine, step by step
Step 1: Get ready
- Connect the charger and keep the laptop plugged in for the whole session.
- Close your other programs and save your work.
- Make sure your broadband is steady, because some driver files are large.
Step 2: Scan
Open Dell Command Update and press the Check or Scan button. The wording can differ slightly between versions. After a minute or two it shows a list grouped by type, such as audio, network, chipset, video and BIOS.
Step 3: Read before you install
Each line shows a name, a version and often a short note about what it fixes. Tick the driver items you want. If you are unsure what an item is, leave it for the moment and ask. You do not need to install everything on the first day.
Step 4: Drivers first, then restart
Install the drivers and restart when asked. Run the scan again to confirm the list is shorter.
Step 5: BIOS last
If a BIOS update is listed, do the backup and key checks in the next sections, then install it on its own. The screen may go dark, the fans may spin up and the laptop may restart more than once. This is normal. Do not switch the laptop off, close the lid or unplug the charger while the BIOS update is running.
Why BIOS updates matter: Dell's advisory DSA-2026-144
Dell publishes security advisories for its BIOS updates. In advisory DSA-2026-144, Dell describes seven OpenSSL vulnerabilities (OpenSSL is a software library that handles encryption) in the BIOS of its client computers and rates the impact as High. The advisory covers Alienware, Latitude, Inspiron, OptiPlex, Precision and Dell Pro computers. Dell released the fixed BIOS versions between 24 April and 16 July 2026.
The fix is a BIOS made for your exact model, so there is no single version number to look for. Dell Command Update should offer the right one, or you can look up your model on Dell's Drivers and Downloads page using your Service Tag (the short code on the sticker under the laptop). You can read the advisory on Dell's DSA-2026-144 page. If your model is not named there, no action is needed for that advisory, but the monthly habit is still useful.
Before a BIOS update: backup and BitLocker key
A BIOS update changes something deep in the laptop, so a safety net costs little.
- Back up your files. Copy Documents, Desktop and Pictures to a pen drive or external drive. Our guide to what to do before every laptop BIOS update has a fuller checklist.
- Note your BitLocker key. BitLocker is Windows' built-in drive lock. After a BIOS update some laptops ask for the 48-digit recovery key on the next start. In Windows, search for Device encryption or BitLocker in Settings to see whether it is on, and sign in at your Microsoft account's recovery key page to find the key. If BitLocker is on and you cannot find the key, stop and ask before updating the BIOS. Our page on BitLocker drive recovery explains the options.
Power cuts and Dell BIOS updates
A power cut or a voltage dip during a BIOS update is a real risk in many Indian homes and schools. A laptop with a healthy battery and the charger plugged in may ride through a short cut, but a laptop with a weak battery may switch off. Choose a time when the power is steady, charge the battery to a good level first, and avoid starting the update just before a known power shutdown. If the laptop does not start after a BIOS update, do not keep pressing the power button. Leave it and ask for help.
When to get help
- The BIOS update stopped part-way or the laptop will not start afterwards.
- BitLocker asks for a key you cannot find.
- Dell Command Update shows an error again and again, or no updates ever appear for your model.
- The laptop is still under Dell warranty. In that case, go to Dell's own authorised service first.
For laptops out of warranty, or if you choose independent repair, see our Dell BIOS service page. We are an independent repair service, not an authorised Dell service centre. The wider Dell laptop repair page lists the other faults we handle, and our Dell service page for Secunderabad covers doorstep visits across Hyderabad. Laptops can also come to us by courier from anywhere in India. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. If you would like someone to do this routine for you every year, our annual care plan is one option.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Treat the BIOS update like a short train journey: do it with the charger in, the work saved and nothing else running. Drivers can wait a day if you are unsure, but a BIOS update should never be started in a hurry. Write your BitLocker key on paper and keep it with your warranty papers. Ten minutes of preparation saves hours of worry.
