How to check your Windows build and Intel driver on a Dell laptop

LR LRW Engineer Team ~5 min read

Key takeaways

  • Press Windows key and R, type winver and press Enter. The box shows your Windows version and OS Build, such as 26100.8894. This takes ten seconds and changes nothing on the laptop.
  • On 14 July 2026 Microsoft said the July update might not be offered on some Dell PCs with an Intel processor because of an Intel IPF driver problem. KB5121767 followed on 18 July 2026.
  • Microsoft named builds 26100.8894 for 24H2 and 26200.8894 for 25H2 in KB5121767. It applies only to affected devices; if yours is not affected, Microsoft says no action is required.
  • If your Dell shuts down by itself, runs hot or loses battery quickly, do not uninstall drivers on your own; note what happens and ask a technician.

This post is for anyone with a Dell Inspiron, Vostro, Latitude, XPS or other Dell laptop with an Intel processor who has heard about the July 2026 Windows update and wonders whether it affects them. You do not need technical skill. You will learn how to read your Windows version and build, how to see your update history, where the Intel driver entries appear in Device Manager, and what Microsoft actually said on 14 and 18 July 2026.

How do I check my Windows build and Intel driver on a Dell laptop?

Short answer: Press the Windows key and R together, type winver and press Enter. Read the version and OS Build. Then open Settings, Windows Update, Update history to see which updates are installed. In Device Manager, open System devices to see Intel driver entries. Reading these does not change anything on the laptop.

What did Microsoft say, and on which dates?

  • 14 July 2026: Microsoft said the July security update (KB5101650) might not be offered on some Dell PCs with an Intel processor. The reason was an incompatibility with the Intel Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) driver, which Dell had reported. IPF is Intel software that works with the laptop's power and performance settings. The symptoms Microsoft listed were unexpected shutdowns, reduced performance, overheating and shorter battery life. Microsoft gave no count of the models affected.
  • 18 July 2026: Microsoft released the out-of-band update KB5121767 (an extra update released outside the normal monthly schedule). It fixes an issue affecting a limited number of devices with an Intel IPF driver that could cause changes in performance, power consumption or system behaviour. It includes servicing stack update KB5120102.

Microsoft says KB5121767 is only for affected devices. If your device is not affected, no action is required. You can read Microsoft's KB5121767 page. These statements were true on their dates. Check Windows Update history or Microsoft's release health page for today's position.

Step 1: Read your Windows version and build

  1. Press the Windows key and R together.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. Read the lines Version and OS Build. For example, Version 24H2 with OS Build 26100.8894.

You can also open Settings, System, About and look under Windows specifications. The wording can differ slightly between versions.

Windows versionBuild named in KB5121767
Windows 11 24H226100.8894
Windows 11 25H226200.8894

The number before the dot identifies the version, and the number after the dot grows with each update. If your build matches or is higher than the one in the table for your version, KB5121767 or a later update is generally included. Microsoft named builds only for 24H2 and 25H2, so if you are on another version such as 26H2, check Update history instead. Note that Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro stopped receiving updates on 13 October 2026, so owners on 24H2 should move to a newer version. Our guide on what to back up before upgrading to Windows 11 26H2 will help.

Step 2: See your update history

  1. Open Settings, then Windows Update.
  2. Choose Update history.
  3. Under Quality updates, look for KB5121767 or a later cumulative update.

If no recent updates appear, choose Check for updates. Keep the charger connected and do not switch the laptop off while updates install.

Step 3: Find the Intel driver in Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
  2. Open System devices (some laptops list it under Software components) and look for entries with Intel and Innovation Platform Framework in the name. The exact names differ by model, and not every Dell laptop will show them.
  3. Right-click an entry, choose Properties, then the Driver tab, to read the driver date and version.

Only read the details. Do not uninstall or roll back drivers unless a technician or Dell's support page tells you to, since removing the wrong driver can cause new problems.

Power cuts, heat and long Windows downloads

If your laptop shuts down on its own, first rule out the everyday causes. Dust in the fan and vents is a frequent cause in Indian cities, and summer heat makes it worse. A tired battery, or a charger that is loose or damaged, can also switch a laptop off. Power cuts and voltage dips during an update can leave Windows half-installed, so plug in the charger, wait for steady power, and keep your files backed up. A weak broadband line can make the large update downloads stall; let them finish rather than switching off.

When to get help

  • The laptop still shuts down by itself after all updates are installed.
  • It becomes very hot, or the fan runs loudly all the time.
  • The battery drains much faster than it used to.
  • Windows Update fails again and again with an error code.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team

Write down what you see before asking for help: the Windows version and build from winver, the date of the last update, and exactly when the shutdowns happen. A short note like this saves a technician a lot of guessing and means you are not asked to change things at random. Photos of the winver box and the update history are perfect.
