Every 6 months (before summer break and before the post-monsoon semester): clean all vents with compressed air, open the chassis for a full fan blowout, refresh thermal paste if the machine is 2+ years old, test all keys on the keyboard (shared-use keyboards see significantly more wear), and inspect the hinge for play.
