Does your laptop actually need an annual service?
Short answer: Yes — and India’s climate makes it more necessary than in most other countries. Dust accumulates inside the heatsink (the metal block that cools the CPU) at a rate determined by ambient air quality and fan runtime. Indian kitchens, open offices, and homes without central air produce more airborne particulate than sealed, filtered environments. A laptop used daily in India will accumulate a dust layer dense enough to affect cooling within 10–14 months. Beyond dust, battery cycle count, SSD health, and OS software debt all benefit from a structured annual reset. The checklist below divides tasks into what you can do yourself and what requires a technician.
The annual service checklist — India timing and task split
Step 1: Pre-summer service (April) — the most critical window
April is the single best time for a professional service in India. You are about to enter the hottest months (May–June), and a clean heatsink and fresh thermal paste give your laptop its maximum thermal headroom for the heat ahead. Tasks for the professional visit: internal dust removal from heatsink and fan blades; thermal paste replacement if CPU temperatures are running 10°C+ above baseline; fan bearing check; DC jack and port inspection; battery health reading. Tasks you can do yourself in April: run Windows Update fully; uninstall applications not used in the past year; run Disk Cleanup including System Files; check SSD health with Crystal DiskInfo (a free tool that shows drive health grade, reallocated sector count, and temperature). Also read our detailed summer overheating prevention guide to understand what the thermal service is protecting against.
Step 2: Post-monsoon check (October) — moisture and humidity recovery
After September, it is worth a quick check for moisture-related issues that developed silently during the rainy season. DIY checks: wipe the keyboard and display with a dry microfibre cloth and look for any residue suggesting moisture ingress around the keys; open the battery settings (Windows: Settings › System › Power & Battery) and note if estimated battery life has dropped noticeably since April. If you notice intermittent keyboard keys, a musty smell from vents, or the fan making a slightly rough sound, those are signs of humidity-related wear that a technician should inspect. Our guide on monsoon laptop care covers the full rainy-season prevention protocol.
Step 3: The DIY monthly checks (5 minutes)
Between professional services, a 5-minute monthly habit catches problems early. Check: (1) Is the fan audible during light tasks like browsing? If yes, the heatsink may be partially blocked. (2) Is the battery health below 80% of original? Check via powercfg /batteryreport in Windows or System Information on Mac. (3) Is SSD free space above 20%? Check in Windows Explorer. (4) Is Windows Update current? Outstanding major updates delay themselves for weeks on busy laptops, and the deferred restarts accumulate memory issues. These four checks take under five minutes and create a data trail that makes professional diagnosis faster when something does go wrong. Read our full monthly maintenance routine guide for the complete 10-minute checklist.
Step 4: The India angle — is an AMC worth it?
An AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) is a fixed-fee service agreement covering unlimited visits over a year. Our Annual Service Care Pack covers Windows laptops at ₹2,999/year and MacBooks at ₹3,499/year — that is roughly ₹8 a day for unlimited service, free pickup and drop, and parts at actual cost. It makes financial sense for: laptops more than 2 years old (more frequent maintenance needs); laptops used in dusty or humid environments; small businesses where downtime cost exceeds service cost; and users who have experienced recurring problems (overheating, battery issues) that a single service did not permanently resolve. For a laptop under 2 years old in good condition, a single annual professional service at ₹500–₹1,500 is sufficient.
When to call a laptop repair service (and what it costs)
When DIY ends
Call a professional when: temperatures exceed 85°C under normal load; battery capacity is below 60% of design; the fan runs continuously at high speed; or any hardware component (key, port, hinge) shows physical wear beyond cosmetic. Annual servicing is also the right time to surface and fix issues before they worsen.
Annual service cost in India
Professional internal clean + thermal paste: ₹600–₹1,500. Full annual inspection + clean + software check: ₹800–₹2,000. Our AMC plan covers all of this unlimited for ₹2,999/year (Windows) or ₹3,499/year (MacBook).
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The laptops that come in for the least expensive repairs are the ones that come in on a schedule. A ₹1,200 annual service prevents the ₹8,000 motherboard repair that results from a year of running at 98°C with blocked vents. That is not an exaggeration — we see the heat-damaged boards and we know which ones had preventive services and which ones did not.
