Factory thermal paste on RTX 30 and 40 series TUF GPUs loses conductivity within 12–24 months under gaming load. The GPU (your graphics processor) drops clock speed automatically to protect itself — you’ll notice frame rates falling in games that used to run smoothly. A thermal repaste service fixes this without any part replacement.
TUF Gaming uses a barrel-style DC jack on a separate charging board. The solder joints holding the barrel connector to the board crack when the heavy 180W–240W adapter is tugged sideways. Symptoms: laptop only charges at certain angles, or the power LED flickers. This is a board swap or resolder — not a motherboard replacement.
High-refresh panels (144Hz, 165Hz, 240Hz) in TUF A15, F15, A16, F16 and A17 use LED backlights that can develop uniform or partial dimming. If your screen looks washed out at low brightness or has a pink/yellow tint near the edges, the backlight driver or panel itself needs replacement.
TUF Gaming uses a single-zone (white or red) backlit keyboard — simpler than ROG’s per-key RGB, but still prone to flat-cable connector damage and individual key-switch wear. If several keys stop registering or the backlight is patchy, keyboard replacement resolves it in a single visit.
TUF Gaming runs a dual-fan configuration. After 2–3 years of sustained gaming at high RPM, the sleeve bearings wear and produce a grinding or rattling noise. Ignoring this leads to complete fan failure and GPU overheating. Fan replacement costs less than you’d expect and takes under an hour.
TUF Gaming’s 4-cell 90Wh battery is designed for portability between sessions, not all-day unplugged use. Heavy gaming while plugged in at 100% charge accelerates cycle wear. When runtime drops below 1–1.5 hours unplugged or the battery shows swelling (lid won’t sit flat), replace it immediately.
Liquid that enters the keyboard travels down to the motherboard tray. Power off immediately, do not try to restart, and ship or bring the laptop within 24 hours. Faster action drastically improves recovery odds. TUF’s chassis provides some splash resistance (MIL-SPEC) but is not waterproof.
Some TUF F15 and A15 units with Intel AX201 and Mediatek MT7921 Wi-Fi cards develop intermittent drops — the card disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. Driver updates help temporarily; the permanent fix is replacing the M.2 Wi-Fi card with a more stable Intel AX210 or similar.
TUF Gaming A16 and F16 feature HDMI 2.1 (supporting 4K 120Hz output). The port’s solder pads on the motherboard can crack from lateral force when a cable is pulled at an angle. We resolder the port at chip level — replacing the motherboard for this is unnecessary and very expensive.

Every laptop leaves the factory with thermal paste — a compound between the processor or GPU and the metal heat-spreader that sits above it. This paste conducts the heat away from the chip so it doesn’t overheat. On ROG Zephyrus models, Asus uses liquid metal (a gallium-based compound) that resists degradation for 3–4 years. On TUF Gaming models, Asus uses standard high-performance paste, which starts losing conductivity between 12 and 18 months under sustained gaming load.
When the paste breaks down, the GPU temperature climbs to 85–95°C under load. At that point, the RTX chip throttles itself — it cuts its own clock speed to cool down, and you see frame rates drop. Many owners blame the game or Windows, not the paste. A repaste service drops GPU temps by 10–18°C on average, and frame rates recover immediately.
Our recommendation: if your TUF Gaming is 12–15 months old and you game regularly, book a preventive thermal service before throttling begins. Preventive service costs the same as reactive service — but your GPU doesn’t take damage from running at 95°C for weeks before you notice.
