Surface UEFI recovery is handled through the Surface Recovery Image downloaded from Microsoft and written to a USB drive, which reflashes the firmware through Microsoft's own signed recovery path. We do not solder or programmer-flash Surface BIOS chips because the firmware is cryptographically signed and tied to the device TPM; unsigned writes do not function. Surface UEFI password locks at the enterprise SEMM level require the recovery certificate from the IT administrator who enrolled the device. For consumer Surface units locked at the UEFI level by a forgotten password, we apply the Surface UEFI reset procedure through Microsoft's Surface Management Portal where the owner can verify device identity.
