Apple uses a separate battery model code for nearly every MacBook variant: A2337 for the Air M1, A2681 for the Air M2, A2779 for the Pro 14" M2, and so on. Each cell ships at a different price. Unlike Windows batteries where many laptops share the same form factor, MacBook batteries almost never cross over between generations.

Two things to look at: Cycle Count and Condition. Both live in System Information — no third-party app needed.
Click the Apple menu → hold Option → click “System Information” (or search Spotlight for “System Information”). This is the full hardware report, not System Settings.

Apple publishes model-specific battery cycle limits. A cycle count alone does not determine whether replacement is needed; consider condition and actual runtime.
macOS shows one of four conditions: Normal, Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery. Any status other than Normal means capacity has dropped below Apple’s threshold. “Service Battery” in the menu bar is macOS’s visible warning — by this point you should book a replacement.

Generic aftermarket MacBook batteries from unknown suppliers fail at a high rate in bonded-design MacBooks. Because the cell is glued in and tightly packed, a cell that swells or loses voltage suddenly causes collateral damage to the logic board or display. We do not use no-brand aftermarket cells on any MacBook, regardless of cost pressure. If you have seen a very low quote elsewhere, ask them what grade cell they are fitting — the answer tells you the risk.
