Thunderbolt eGPU works · MXM is rare · We bench-test thermal first — free with ₹149 diagnosis.
Most “my laptop GPU is too slow” is really thermal throttling — not a GPU power gap. Before recommending any hardware path, we bench-test your GPU under sustained load with Furmark + HWiNFO. A ₹2,500 PTM7950 thermal repaste often delivers 20–30% sustained FPS uplift with no hardware change whatsoever. If you genuinely need more GPU headroom, three paths exist: an external Thunderbolt eGPU dock (best for 90% of customers), an MXM module swap on pre-2020 socketed gaming laptops, or a BGA reball for a failing soldered chip. We do all three in-house.
Almost all modern laptop GPUs are BGA-soldered to the motherboard. These are the three genuine paths available — and we’ll tell you honestly which one fits your machine.
Razer Core X / ADT-Link R43SG / Sonnet Breakaway + a desktop RTX 4070, 4080, or 4090. Enclosures ₹18K–₹35K + GPU cost. Performance: ~70% of native desktop due to the PCIe x4 4.0 Thunderbolt bandwidth cap — closer to 85–90% for creator workloads (Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere). Requires a Thunderbolt 3 or TB4 port, present on most 2018+ premium laptops. Best path for 90% of customers who want meaningful GPU uplift.
Some older gaming and workstation laptops shipped with socketed MXM-B GPU modules: Clevo P870-series, MSI GT72 / GT75 / GT83, Alienware 17 R4/R5, HP ZBook 17 G3/G4. Custom RTX 3070 / 3080 MXM kits exist from specialist suppliers. ₹40K–₹80K for the module + ₹3K labour + full thermal rework on VRMs and VRAM. A genuine hardware upgrade, but limited to these specific pre-2020 models. We open the chassis first to confirm your exact socket before quoting.
For failing or non-functional soldered GPUs — NVIDIA bumpgate-era chips, dry BGA joints from years of thermal cycling, or GPU damage after liquid spills. Specialist micro-soldering with an infrared BGA rework station: desolder the GPU, reflow solder balls, or fit a replacement same-family chip. ₹8K–₹15K labour + chip cost. This is a repair, not an upgrade — but it restores full performance on high-end gaming laptops where motherboard replacement would cost far more.
Most customers who come in wanting a GPU upgrade actually have a thermal throttling problem. We bench-test first — free with the ₹149 visit — because the right diagnosis saves you thousands.
95% chance: thermal throttling, not GPU weakness. When GPU temps climb past 85–90°C, the chip clocks itself down to protect from overheating. We bench under Furmark + your actual games, log temps and clocks with HWiNFO. Honeywell PTM7950 repaste + Thermalright pads on VRAM and VRMs typically drops GPU temps 12–18°C and restores sustained boost clocks. ₹2,500–₹4,000.
Could be a failing GPU. Colour block corruption, shimmering pixels, driver timeout crashes (VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSOD), or black screen with audio loop still playing all point to GPU hardware issues. We bench-isolate with 3DMark Stability Test to determine whether it’s a VRAM chip fault, dry BGA joint, or a thermal problem presenting as a GPU fault.
This symptom often means the laptop’s iGPU is alive but the discrete GPU is non-functional. Could be a dead dGPU, a failed MUX switch, or a display cable issue. We bench-test by plugging into an external monitor and checking GPU detection in Device Manager. If the dGPU is confirmed non-functional, we quote BGA reball vs eGPU-as-replacement — whichever is better value for your specific situation.
Three low-cost interventions that most gaming laptops benefit from before any GPU path makes sense.
PTM7950 phase-change compound on the CPU and GPU cores, Kryonaut Extreme on VRMs, Thermalright Odyssey pads (1.5mm–2mm, 12.8 W/mK) on VRAM and VRM heatsink contact points. Typical outcome: 12–18°C GPU temp drop, sustained boost clocks restored, 20–30% more FPS in thermally limited scenarios. ₹2,500–₹4,000 including parts and 1-hour labour.
Using MSI Afterburner Curve Editor to find the voltage-frequency knee — typically −80 to −120 mV at the 1900–2000 MHz point on most RTX 30/40-series laptop GPUs. Lower voltage means lower heat at identical or better clocks, which means the thermal limiter backs off and boost holds longer. We do this as a free add-on with any thermal rework. Typical gain: 5–12 more FPS sustained at zero hardware cost.
On some gaming laptops (RTX 3070/4060/4070 laptops with GDDR6 running hot), the VRAM throttles before the GPU core does — causing stutters rather than smooth frame drops. Adding a Thermalright Odyssey copper shim or dedicated VRAM heatsink plate with 2mm thermal pads drops VRAM temps 10–20°C and eliminates GDDR6 thermal stutter. ₹1,200–₹2,000 including parts.
We bench every laptop under sustained GPU load before recommending any upgrade path. Often the fix is a repaste — not new hardware. Honest call, always.
Infrared BGA rework equipment for soldered GPU reflow and replacement. The same rig we use for motherboard chip-level work — not outsourced.
From Thunderbolt dock setup to ADT-Link M.2 riser installs for laptops without TB ports — we configure drivers, test stability, and benchmark verify.
Every thermal job, reball, and eGPU install carries a 30-day workmanship warranty. No Fix — No Fee on diagnostic work. ₹149 visit charge.
Almost always no — modern laptop GPUs are BGA-soldered directly to the motherboard and cannot be swapped out. The real upgrade path for 90% of users is a Thunderbolt 3/4 external GPU (eGPU) dock paired with a desktop GPU. If you have a pre-2020 gaming laptop with a socketed MXM-B module (Clevo P870, MSI GT-series, Alienware 17 R4/R5), a physical swap is possible. For a failing soldered GPU, BGA reball or replacement is the repair path — not an upgrade, but it restores full performance.
Razer Core X enclosure ~₹22,000 + RTX 4070 ~₹55,000 = ~₹77K total. Budget route: ADT-Link M.2 NVMe riser starts at ₹3,500 but requires routing a cable out of the laptop chassis — we do this install for ~₹4,500 labour + parts. Cheaper M.2 risers give roughly 50% of desktop GPU performance due to PCIe x4 3.0 bandwidth compared to Thunderbolt’s x4 4.0.
No — Thunderbolt 3/4 caps at PCIe x4 4.0, which limits eGPU performance to ~70% of native desktop on average. For creator workloads (Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere) it’s closer to 85–90% because those tasks are VRAM- and compute-bound, not bandwidth-sensitive. Competitive gaming takes the biggest hit. If you’re routing video back through the laptop’s internal display, add ~10% more loss. Plug the monitor directly into the eGPU dock to recover that.
Confirmed MXM-B socketed models: Clevo P870-series (P870DM / P870TM / P870KM), MSI GT72 / GT73 / GT75 / GT83, Alienware 17 R4 / R5 / M18, HP ZBook 17 G3 / G4, Dell Precision 7710 / 7720. Custom RTX 3070 / 3080 MXM modules are available from specialist suppliers. Bring the laptop in — we’ll open it, confirm the socket, and quote the exact module.
Possibly. Symptoms of a failing soldered laptop GPU: on-screen artifacts (colour blocks, pixel shimmering), driver timeout crashes, black screen with audio still playing, BSOD with VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, or sudden shutdown under GPU load only. We bench-test under Furmark + 3DMark Stability Test and monitor temps, clocks, and VRAM error logs with HWiNFO to isolate GPU hardware failure from thermal throttling or a driver issue.
Depends on the rest of the machine. If the laptop is otherwise solid — good battery health, screen, keyboard, and no corrosion on the motherboard — a ₹8K–₹15K reball is far better value than a ₹50K+ replacement laptop. If the machine has multiple other issues, the honest advice is to put that money toward an eGPU dock on a new mid-range laptop instead. We give you the full cost comparison before any work starts.
Yes — if your laptop has an M.2 NVMe slot, an ADT-Link riser can connect an external GPU enclosure via PCIe x4 3.0. Performance is ~50% of desktop due to the lower PCIe 3.0 bandwidth, but it’s a real and functional upgrade. We do this build: open the laptop, route the riser cable through the chassis, fit it into a compact external enclosure, install drivers, and benchmark. Labour ~₹4,500 + parts (riser ~₹3,500, enclosure separate).
