The 840 G5 and G6 use a cantilever hinge design where the LCD lid is supported entirely by the aluminium bracket on each corner of the display assembly — there is no central spine to distribute load. Business users open and close their laptop an average of 8–10 times per day (compared to 2–3 times for consumer laptops). Over 1,000+ daily cycles across 3–4 years, the microscopic stress from each open-close event concentrates at the weld point where the hinge barrel meets the LCD-side bracket.
The aluminium fatigues at that weld, the bracket cracks, and the lid starts to wobble. Left unrepaired, the LCD cable inside the hinge assembly gets pinched and tears — turning a ₹2,000 bracket job into a ₹6,000+ cable + screen repair. HP revised the hinge design in the G7 onward with a thicker bracket and an additional support rib; G7, G8, G9, G10 hinge failures are far less common.
