XPS hardware fails in specific, well-documented ways. Here is what we see most often and what the fix actually involves.
The 3.5K OLED on the XPS 15 9520/9530 and the OLED variants of the 16 and 17 can develop vertical lines from flex-cable damage at the hinge pivot. True burn-in (static-image ghost) does occur on older OLED units held at max brightness. We inspect the flex cable first — if that is the cause, repair cost is far lower than a full panel swap.
The InfinityEdge panel is precision-bonded to the glass digitiser — you cannot replace just the glass. The full LCD or OLED + touch assembly must be swapped as a unit. Requires a heat gun, correct adhesive strips, and colour calibration post-install on OLED units. Takes 60–120 minutes in lab.
XPS 13 9300–9320 uses a sealed Li-poly cell that swells as it ages, pressing against the keyboard deck or bottom cover. A swollen battery is a safety risk — stop charging and bring it in. Replacement takes 45–60 minutes. We carry cells for the most common XPS 13 variants.
XPS 15 9510 onwards uses an aluminium hinge bracket screwed into the LCD back-cover. Repeated one-handed opening or a drop can crack the bracket or strip the threaded inserts. We replace the bracket assembly and re-torque. If the top-cover carbon fibre has cracked at the pivot, we address that too.
The XPS 13 (9300–9340) has only two Thunderbolt 4 ports — no USB-A, no HDMI. When one port stops charging or recognising peripherals, it is usually solder fatigue from repeated plug stress at the controller connector. We resolder at chip level. Cost: ₹3,800–₹6,500.
The XPS 13 Plus (9320) replaced the physical F-key row with a capacitive haptic strip. These fail when liquid reaches the haptic engine or when the flex cable contact oxidises. Standard key failures across the XPS 13/15/16/17 are full keyboard cassette replacements. Backlight tested post-fit.
The XPS 15 and 17 have high-TDP CPUs (Intel 12th–14th gen Core H) and discrete GPUs packed into a thin chassis. Dell’s factory thermal paste degrades in 2–3 years, causing CPU to throttle from 45 W to 15 W under sustained load. A repaste with quality compound typically drops sustained temps by 15–20°C, restoring full clock speed.
XPS fans are paired dual-blower units on the 15/16/17 and a single blower on the 13/14. Bearing wear causes a grinding or rattling sound especially at low RPM. We replace the fan assembly and clean the heat-pipe fins while the chassis is open.

The InfinityEdge OLED or 4K bonded panel is Dell’s most expensive component. A 3.5K OLED for the XPS 15 costs significantly more than a standard FHD IPS for the Inspiron 15. The panel itself accounts for most of the repair price.
The XPS 13 chassis is 15.3 mm thick — every component is packed tighter than in a standard laptop. Getting to the battery, hinge, or board requires more disassembly steps than on an Inspiron of the same screen size. Labour time is proportionally higher.
XPS batteries are Li-poly cells glued and routed under the chassis plate — not the removable module design of older laptops. Extraction without tearing the connector requires heat mats and the correct adhesive solvent. The cell itself also costs more than a standard 3-cell Inspiron battery.
The Thunderbolt 4 controller on the XPS 13 (which doubles as the only I/O) is a more complex chip-level repair than a standard USB port. When the controller fails, the repair involves BGA-level work rather than simply re-soldering a through-hole jack.
