On the Latitude, the power button is mounted on the palmrest or the keyboard deck depending on model variant — it connects to the Embedded Controller via a dedicated flex cable. The flex cable on the Latitude runs under the keyboard and over the battery bracket — on units where the chassis flexes due to a cracked hinge-boss or a drop, this flex cable can crack at the bend point, leaving the power button mechanically intact but electrically open. On newer Latitude models, the power button also contains the fingerprint sensor — a failed fingerprint sensor can corrupt the power button firmware state, preventing boot even with a functional switch.
We bypass the power button via the keyboard shortcut (some Latitude models support this) to confirm the motherboard itself powers on. If it does, the fault is button-side.
