This post is for Windows 11 owners whose update runs for a while, reaches roughly a third of the way, then fails with 0x800f0922 and goes back to the previous version. You will learn what Microsoft confirmed in May 2026, why a tiny hidden partition can stop a whole update, which checks are safe to do yourself and which job belongs to a technician.
Why does Windows 11 update fail with error 0x800f0922 and roll back?
Short answer: Microsoft confirmed that the May 2026 security update, KB5089549, can fail with 0x800f0922 and roll back at about 35 percent when the EFI System Partition has less than about 10 MB of free space. That partition is a small hidden area that holds start-up files. The error code also has other causes, so confirm before you change anything.
What was confirmed?
BleepingComputer covered Microsoft's confirmation in its report on KB5089549 install issues. The exact free-space figure is approximate in that report, so treat 10 MB as a rough line rather than an exact one.
What is the EFI System Partition?
A drive is divided into sections called partitions. Most of it holds Windows and your files. One small section, usually only a few hundred MB, holds the files Windows needs at the very start. During some updates Windows writes new start-up files into it. If it is nearly full, the write fails, Windows cannot finish, and it rolls back to protect the laptop.
First, rule out the simple causes
- Free space on the main drive. Open File Explorer, This PC, and check the C: drive has several GB free.
- Pending restarts. Restart, then try Windows Update again.
- Security software. Some third-party antivirus programs block updates. Update it, or pause it briefly.
- Disconnect extras. Unplug USB drives, printers and docks.
- Run the repair troubleshooter. Settings, System, Troubleshoot, Other troubleshooters, Windows Update. The wording can differ slightly between versions.

Checking the EFI partition safely
You can look at the partition without changing it. Right-click Start and open Disk Management. Find the small partition labelled EFI System Partition, usually 100 MB to 500 MB, on the same disk as Windows. Note its size. Disk Management does not reliably show how much is free in this partition, and Windows hides it from File Explorer. Measuring the free space needs more advanced tools. If you are not comfortable with that, stop here and ask a technician, because this is where mistakes happen.
Do not assign a drive letter and delete files from the EFI partition, and do not resize it with a partition tool, unless you understand exactly what you are doing and have a full backup. A wrong deletion can leave the laptop unable to start. If you proceed with any change, copy your important files first.
If the cause is the EFI partition
A technician can free the space safely after backing up the partition. They can then re-run the update. The exact steps depend on how the laptop was set up, and dual-boot systems and second-hand installations can be more prone to a crowded partition. That is why we do not give a command list here.
Second-hand installs, power cuts and half-finished downloads
Second-hand and shop-installed laptops are common, and repeated reinstalls or dual-boot setups can leave extra start-up files behind. A power cut during a failed update can add further confusion, so keep the charger connected and use a UPS (a small battery backup) for a desktop. Patchy broadband can leave a half-downloaded update, so if the same update fails repeatedly, let it finish downloading on a steady connection before you judge. When to get help
- The update fails with 0x800f0922 more than twice and rolls back each time.
- You use dual boot, or Windows was installed by someone else.
- You do not have a backup and the laptop is behaving oddly after rollbacks.
- The laptop stops at a repair screen after a failed update.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
A repeating rollback is Windows protecting the laptop, so do not fight it. Take a backup, note the exact error code, and stop trying the same update again and again. A technician can read the actual cause in a few minutes, and a careful partition fix is far better than a laptop that no longer starts.
