This post is for anyone whose Windows 11 laptop or desktop restarted after an update and stopped at a blue screen reading UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. You will learn what Microsoft confirmed about the January 2026 update, which PCs it affected, what the message means in plain words, which safe steps you can try, and when to stop and ask a technician so that your files stay safe.
What does UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME mean after a Windows 11 update?
Short answer: It means Windows cannot open the part of the drive it needs to start. The stop code (the error number shown on the blue screen) is 0xED. Microsoft confirmed that the 13 January 2026 update caused it on a limited number of commercial PCs, and marked it fully resolved in the 10 February 2026 update. On a home laptop the same screen can have other causes.
What did Microsoft confirm?
Reports of Microsoft acknowledging the issue appeared on 29 January 2026, and the fix was covered by BleepingComputer in its report on the fix for boot failures linked to failed updates. Microsoft described the problem as limited and commercial. It did not describe it as a general home-user problem.
Is it the January update on my PC?
Ask these questions.
- Is it an office-managed laptop, or an ordinary home one?
- Did an earlier update fail and roll back before this one?
- Is it running 24H2 or 25H2?
If the answers are mostly no, the cause is likely something else, such as a drive with errors, a cut-off update or a loose or ageing storage drive. The screen alone cannot tell these apart.
Safe steps to try first
- Restart once. Hold the power button until the laptop switches off, wait ten seconds and start it again.
- Let Windows try its own repair. If it offers Automatic Repair or opens the Recovery screen, choose Advanced options and Startup Repair. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
- Remove extras. Unplug USB drives, printers and docks, then restart.
- Update after you are back in. Install every pending Windows update, since the February 2026 update carries Microsoft's fix for this case.
If Windows opens the Recovery screen, you may meet a BitLocker key request. Find the key first, using our BitLocker drive recovery guide.
What to avoid
- Do not format the drive or choose Reset this PC with Remove everything. This erases the files you are trying to reach.
- Do not run chkdsk (a disk repair command) again and again. On a drive that is failing, repeated repair attempts can make recovery harder.
- Do not pull the battery or force-switch-off in the middle of a repair screen that is clearly working.
If the same stop code keeps returning, the drive itself may be at fault. Our NTFS partition recovery guide explains what a damaged drive looks like.
Power cuts, heat and ageing drives
A power cut or a voltage dip during an update is a possible reason for a laptop to wake with a start-up error, so keep the charger connected throughout. Heat and dust, which are part of daily life in most Indian cities, also tire storage drives over the years, particularly in cramped older laptops, so a drive that has been slow for months deserves a health check before the next big update. Humid monsoon months can add to connector problems in older machines. If you are far from a service centre, we accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India.
When to get help
- The blue screen returns after every restart and Startup Repair does not help.
- The laptop does not detect its drive in the BIOS (the small program that starts the laptop before Windows loads).
- Your files are not backed up and you cannot start Windows.
- You hear clicking from the drive, or the laptop was dropped.
Our Windows installation and repair service handles start-up repair, and files can be copied off first. In Hyderabad we can visit you through our doorstep service. The charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us.
Bring the charger with the laptop, and note down the exact wording on the blue screen, including any code in brackets. It saves time at the bench and helps the technician tell a software cause from a drive problem.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
When Windows will not start, the files matter more than the operating system. Windows can be reinstalled; a wiped folder of photos or accounts cannot be brought back. Switch the laptop off, resist the urge to try three more fixes, and have the drive checked and the files copied before any reset.
