This story is for anyone who runs a small clinic, shop or office on a single Windows 11 PC and has heard that updates for their version are ending. It follows a typical case of a dentist in Ludhiana. You will be able to check which version you have, understand what the 13 October 2026 date really means, prepare a safe upgrade, and recognise the signs that you should stop and ask for help.
What happens to a clinic PC when Windows 11 24H2 stops getting updates?
Short answer: On 13 October 2026, Windows 11 24H2 on Home and Pro stops receiving monthly security updates. The PC keeps working, but it no longer gets new protection against threats found after that date. The fix is a version upgrade through Windows Update, which is free, plus a backup and a charged battery before you start.
A typical case from Ludhiana
This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees. It is not a record of one real customer. A dentist, 50, runs a small clinic in Ludhiana. One Windows 11 PC at the front desk holds appointment records, scanned prescriptions and patient photographs. A staff member mentions that updates for the version are ending, and the dentist wants to know whether the PC will stop working. It will not.
Which Windows 11 versions are covered, and until when?
A version (such as 24H2) is a yearly release of Windows 11. Each one has an end date for Home and Pro editions.
A separate release called 26H1 exists, but it is only for new laptops with Snapdragon X2 chips. It is not offered to existing PCs, so a clinic PC will not see it.
How do I check my version?
- Press the Windows key and R together, type winver and press Enter.
- Read the line that says Version. It will show 24H2, 25H2 or 26H2.
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, to see what Windows is offering.
If it says 24H2 and the edition is Home or Pro, plan the upgrade before 13 October. If the PC is run by a company or managed from an office, ask whoever manages it, because the dates for managed editions differ.
What the dentist did before upgrading
Back up the clinic files
She copied the records folder to an external drive and to cloud storage. Our guide on cloud versus external drive backup helps you choose. A version upgrade is normally safe, but any upgrade can go wrong, and patient records without a copy cannot be rebuilt.
Check the clinic software
She asked the vendors of the practice software and the scanner whether they support the newer version. Windows Update may offer the upgrade before an older program has been tested on it.
Run the upgrade at a quiet hour
She started it after clinic hours with the charger and a UPS (a small battery backup) connected. 26H2 is arriving in phases, so it may not show for every PC yet. If Windows offers 25H2 or 26H2, either one moves the PC past the 13 October date. If neither appears, wait and check again rather than using unofficial download tools.
What if the PC is still on Windows 10?
That is a different set of dates. Microsoft extended the free Extended Security Updates for personal Windows 10 devices to 12 October 2027, as reported on 25 June 2026. Devices managed by an organisation are not covered by that free extension. If your clinic PC is older and cannot run Windows 11, ask us before buying anything new.
Power cuts, dust and slow broadband
Voltage dips and short power cuts can happen, and a version upgrade writes a lot of files for a long time. Do not let the PC lose power during the upgrade. Dust from a busy front desk can clog fans, and an overheating PC can struggle during an upgrade. Patchy broadband is the other risk: the upgrade pulls a large download, so start it on a steady connection and leave it running. If the PC will not start after the upgrade, we accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India.
When to get help
Ask a technician if you see any of these.
- The upgrade stops partway and rolls back more than once.
- The PC restarts repeatedly and never reaches the desktop.
- Clinic software or the scanner stops working after the upgrade.
- A BitLocker recovery screen appears and you do not have the key.
For a clinic that cannot afford downtime, our annual care plan covers regular check-ups, and it is an option, not a requirement. In Hyderabad we can visit through our doorstep service, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. A repair quote is given only after diagnosis.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Put the date in your calendar a week ahead, not the day before. Take the backup, confirm the key for any drive encryption, and run Windows Update once on a normal working day when you can spare an hour. A planned upgrade is dull, and dull is what you want for a PC that holds patient records.
