You wanted to replace a slow hard disk, or add more space, and the SSD quote came in higher than you hoped. This guide is for any laptop owner who wants to understand the reason without jargon. It explains what the chip-price forecast actually says, what it does not say, and which parts of your quote you can influence, so you can decide on the right capacity and time to buy.
Why is a laptop SSD upgrade quote rising?
Short answer: SSDs are built from NAND flash memory, and TrendForce, a firm that tracks chip prices, forecasts NAND contract prices to rise about 15-20% in the fourth quarter of 2026. It also says rises for laptop-type SSDs are likely to be restrained. So quotes may move up, but the forecast does not point to a sudden jump for laptop drives.
What does the forecast say?
An SSD (solid state drive, a fast storage drive with no moving parts) stores your files in NAND flash chips. TrendForce publishes a forecast of the price at which makers sell these chips in bulk. For the fourth quarter of 2026 it expects NAND to rise 15-20% on the previous quarter, with enterprise SSDs (for data centres) accelerating and client SSD increases restrained. You can read the release on TrendForce's fourth-quarter price forecast.
This is a forecast, not a price list. It is also a bulk contract price, not what you pay at a shop. TrendForce does not give an SSD figure in rupees.
What makes up your SSD quote?
- Capacity. A 1 TB drive costs more than a 256 GB one. Choose the space you really need.
- Drive type. Laptops use different shapes and connections. A SATA drive and an NVMe drive (a faster type that plugs in like a small card) are not interchangeable. Our NVMe SSD upgrade cost guide explains the difference.
- The slot in your laptop. Some laptops have a free slot, some have the drive fixed in place.
- Copying your data. Moving Windows and your files to the new drive takes time, and that is part of the labour.
- Warranty on the drive. Ask what warranty the drive carries.
The exact quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for your approval before any work begins.
Is an SSD upgrade still worth it?
For a laptop with an old spinning hard disk, an SSD can be one of the bigger speed gains for the money, because starting Windows and opening programs becomes much quicker. For a laptop that already has an SSD and just needs space, you may also consider an external drive. Our SSD and hard disk upgrade page shows the options. Do not replace a drive that is failing without first trying to copy your files, because a failing drive can lose data quickly.
How to avoid paying more than needed
Buy the capacity you need
Check how much space you use today, then add room for growth. A very large drive that you will not fill is an easy cost to avoid.
Compare like with like
When you collect two quotes, ask for the drive type, the capacity, the make and the warranty on each. A lower number may be a smaller or slower drive.
Ask about the old drive
Ask whether your old drive can be put in an enclosure and used as a spare backup. Do not throw away the old drive until you have checked that every file is on the new one.
Rupee prices, heat and power dips
Drives are sold at prices linked to global supply, so rupee prices can change between one month and the next. Buy through a seller who gives a proper invoice and a warranty, because that protects you if the drive fails. Heat and dust are hard on drives, and voltage dips can corrupt files during a copy, so use a surge-protected socket while the data is moving. If you are far from a service centre, courier time adds days, so a backup before you post the laptop is wise.
When to get help
- Windows takes minutes to start, or the laptop freezes while a file opens.
- You hear clicking from an old hard disk, or files will not open.
- You are unsure which type of SSD your laptop takes.
- You want your old files moved without losing anything.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before any upgrade, keep one copy of your important files somewhere other than the laptop, such as a pen drive or cloud storage. A forecast about chip prices should not push you into a rushed purchase. Get the model checked, pick a sensible capacity, and approve the quote only when it is written down.
