You asked for a quote to add RAM to your laptop and the figure looked higher than you expected, or higher than a friend paid some months ago. You are not imagining it. This guide explains in plain words why memory has become costlier, what else decides a quote, and what to ask before you agree, so you can judge whether the price is fair.
Why is a laptop RAM upgrade quote higher now?
Short answer: The price of memory chips, called DRAM, has risen sharply, and repair shops pay that higher price for the RAM modules they fit. TrendForce, a firm that tracks chip prices, reported very large increases in early 2026 and expects smaller ones in the last quarter. Your own quote also depends on the memory type, the size and the labour.
What has happened to memory prices?
RAM (the working memory a laptop uses while it runs programs) is made of DRAM chips. Their contract prices, meaning prices set between makers and big buyers, rose steeply. The figures below are quarter-on-quarter changes, not totals for the year, and some are forecasts.
TrendForce sets out these figures in its forecast for the fourth quarter. The direction is clear: prices are still rising, but more slowly. TrendForce does not give a combined figure for the year, so please do not add the numbers together.
What else is in your quote?
Memory price is only one part. A quote moves up or down with:
- Memory type. DDR4 and DDR5 are different and cannot be swapped. Our DDR4 vs DDR5 guide explains the difference in plain words.
- Size. A bigger module costs more.
- Speed and make. The module must suit your laptop.
- Labour. Some laptops open easily, and some need the whole base taken apart.
The exact quote comes after we identify your model and is shared for your approval before any work begins.
Can your laptop be upgraded at all?
Some laptops have memory in a slot (a socket you can open). Many newer thin laptops have memory soldered to the board, which means it is fixed and cannot be added or replaced. To check, search for your exact model number with the words 'service manual', or ask us on WhatsApp with the model number. Our laptop memory upgrade page shows what we check. If memory is soldered, no shop can add RAM, so do not pay in advance for a module.
Do laptop prices follow memory prices?
Reports suggest so. Asus India said in April 2026 that it expected laptop prices to rise by as much as 45% by the third quarter of 2026 against December 2025, and called that a forecast built up over several quarters. Business Today reported on 1 June 2026 that laptops had risen by 15-30%, with Dell, HP and Lenovo reported to have raised prices. Those are the reports' figures, not ours. Asus also said it expected prices to settle by the end of the fourth quarter.
Rupee prices, dust and voltage dips
Memory is traded in global markets, so rupee prices can follow changes elsewhere. Do not assume that a lower quote from a roadside seller means the same part. Ask for the memory type and size, and for a warranty on the module. Heat and dust shorten the life of any laptop, so a clean laptop in a ventilated spot stays stable. Voltage dips can also upset a laptop mid-work, so use a surge-protected socket.
When to get help
- The laptop slows down badly when you open several tabs or programs.
- You are unsure whether memory is soldered or in a slot.
- A seller offers a module without asking your exact laptop model.
- The laptop restarts or shows a blue screen after a memory change.
Start with our laptop memory service page. In Hyderabad we visit you at home, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. We also accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India.
One more point: a module bought online by itself, without checking the laptop model, is one way to end up paying twice. A module that does not match the slot, the type or the speed will simply not work, and returns can take time. Ask the technician to confirm the part number for your model before you buy anything.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before buying more RAM, check how much your laptop actually uses. If the laptop is slow only when starting, a storage upgrade may help more. Keep your model number handy when you ask for quotes, and compare like with like: same type, same size, same warranty.
