New laptops now carry names like Core Ultra, Snapdragon X2 and Ryzen AI, and the shop assistant may speak as if the choice is obvious. This guide is for anyone buying a laptop in India for study, office work, accounts or creative use. You will see what each chip family is, which India models carry them so far, what is still unconfirmed, and how to choose by use instead of by name.
Which chip family should I choose: Core Ultra, Snapdragon X2 or Ryzen AI?
Short answer: Choose by what you run every day. Intel Core Ultra series 3 has several India laptops listed and runs older Windows software without translation. Snapdragon X2 is an Arm chip, so older programs run through translation. AMD Ryzen AI 400 was announced with up to 60 TOPS of AI speed, but few India models are confirmed so far.
What is each chip family?
Two terms help. The NPU is a chip part that runs AI tasks such as background blur on calls. TOPS is a speed rating for it, and a higher number does not make everyday work faster.
Which India laptops carry them?
Intel Core Ultra series 3
Indian tech press lists the Asus ExpertBook Ultra from ₹1,49,990, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Gen 11 at ₹1,09,990, the Dell XPS 14 from ₹2,05,990, and the Dell XPS 16 from ₹2,78,550. These are launch prices from press listings, so check today's shop price.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X2
Lenovo announced the Yoga Slim 7x with Snapdragon X2 Elite in India on 7 April 2026, on sale from 21 April, at ₹1,32,990 at launch. Asus announced its Zenbook range, including the Zenbook A14 at ₹1,85,990 at launch, on 14 April, on sale from 21 April; Zenbook models use Core Ultra Series 3 or Snapdragon X2, so check which chip your model has.
AMD Ryzen AI 400
AMD said laptops would arrive in the first quarter. Dell's 14S and 16S, launched in India on 28 July 2026 at ₹1,19,990 and ₹2,29,990 at launch, come with Core Ultra Series 3 or Ryzen AI 400 options. Ask the seller to show the exact model and chip name on the box.
How do I pick by use?
- Accounts, Tally, older office or printer software: the chip that runs it without surprises. Core Ultra is the simplest default; test the software first if you consider an Arm laptop.
- Study, browsing, documents: any of the three works. Pay attention to memory, storage and screen instead.
- Long battery life while travelling: compare the battery size in Wh (watt-hours, bigger means more stored energy). Our battery Wh explainer shows how.
- Video, design or AI work: check whether your program uses the NPU or the graphics part. If it does not, the AI number gives you nothing.
Do not buy a laptop for its TOPS number alone; if your software does not use the NPU, you pay for a feature you will not use.
Service, heat and memory when buying in India
Rupee prices vary by shop, and launch prices change. Look at the service side too: ask where the brand's nearest authorised service centre is, because courier time adds days to a repair. Hot summers push thin laptops to throttle, which means the chip slows itself to stay cool, so keep vents clear. Our note on memory types for buyers in India will help with the next question. Memory may be soldered (fixed to the board) on thin models, so ask before you buy. Check that memory and storage are written on the invoice, not only on a sticker or the shop's word.
When to get help
- A new laptop runs very hot or loud within the first weeks.
- Windows will not install or set up cleanly.
- You want your files moved from your old laptop safely.
- A program you need will not run on an Arm laptop.
See our Windows installation page for clean setups. In Hyderabad we visit you at home, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. We also accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India. Back up your files before any reinstall, because it erases the drive.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Make a short list of the five programs you use most. Run each on the laptop in the shop, or ask for a return window in writing. A chip family is a good choice when your own software works on it smoothly, and a poor one when it does not, whatever the advert says.
