How WhatsApp backup and recovery works in India
Short answer: WhatsApp chats can be restored from Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) during app setup on a new or reset device. Local backups exist on the device storage at WhatsApp/Databases/ (Android). Exported .txt or email chat exports are read-only archives — they cannot be imported back into WhatsApp. If neither backup exists, professional forensic data recovery from the old device's storage is the only path.
Step-by-step WhatsApp chat recovery
Step 1: Restore from Google Drive (Android users)
When installing WhatsApp on a new Android phone with the same phone number and Google account, WhatsApp automatically offers to restore from Google Drive backup during setup. Tap Restore and wait — large chat histories with media can take 20–40 minutes on Indian 4G connections. If the restore option does not appear, verify that the Google Drive backup was created: open Google Drive → Storage → check for a WhatsApp backup entry. Backups are linked to the specific phone number — if you changed numbers, you will need to use local backups instead.
Step 2: Restore from local backup (Android)
WhatsApp stores local backup copies in Internal Storage → WhatsApp → Databases. Files are named msgstore.db.crypt15 (most recent), msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.db.crypt15 (daily backups for the past 7 days), and msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt15 (older). Copy the desired backup file, rename it to msgstore.db.crypt15, then uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp. On fresh setup, WhatsApp detects the local backup and offers to restore it. This works even without an internet connection — useful when your Google Drive backup is outdated. See our guide on recovering deleted iMessage data for the equivalent Apple workflow.
Step 3: Restore from iCloud (iPhone users)
On iPhone, WhatsApp backs up to iCloud. To restore: Settings → WhatsApp → Chat Backup (verify backup exists and date). On a new iPhone with the same number, install WhatsApp, complete verification, and tap Restore Chat History when prompted. iCloud WhatsApp backups can be up to several GB — restoration takes longer on India’s typical broadband speeds and may require Wi-Fi (not cellular) due to file size.
Step 4: The India angle — phone number portability and backup loss
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is popular in India, but porting a number while simultaneously switching handsets creates a backup gap: the WhatsApp backup on the old device is tied to the old SIM+Google account combination, and the new device may not have access to the same Google account. Always verify that your Google account on the new phone matches the one linked to the WhatsApp backup before setting up. WhatsApp backups are also not transferred during device-to-device data migration using brand-specific tools (Samsung Smart Switch, OnePlus Switch) — only the Google Drive backup counts for WhatsApp restoration on a new device.
