This images the drive sector by sector, skipping unreadable areas and logging them. Run a second pass later with -d -R to retry the failed sectors. ddrescue is specifically designed to extract maximum data from a degrading drive without making the problem worse. Step 3: When cleanroom is required
A cleanroom (ISO Class 5 or better — an environment where airborne particles are filtered to 3,520 particles per cubic metre) is required when the drive needs read-write head replacement. Step 4: The India context — drop damage during commute
The most common clicking WD Elements scenario in India: the drive was connected to a laptop in a bag and the bag was dropped or set down hard on a two-wheeler or in a car. Modern 2.5-inch HDDs park the heads in a ramp mechanism when not actively reading — this protects against most low-height drops. But a fall of more than 30–40 cm while the drive is actively spinning (mid-file-transfer) causes the head to contact the platter surface.
