Four VFX laptops, one monsoon flood, one bench — what the board-level microscope revealed.

Key takeaways

  • Timing is everything: laptops powered off immediately after water entry have a far better repair outcome than those powered on.
  • Corrosion begins within hours on exposed board traces in India's monsoon humidity.
  • Courier repair is a viable option when no chip-level specialist is available locally — dry packing matters.
  • Project-critical data was recovered from all four machines, even the two that were non-functional on arrival.

How four laptops ended up on our bench from Mumbai

Short answer: A visual effects studio in Mumbai experienced flooding at their ground-floor office during peak monsoon. Four workstation-grade laptops used for rendering and compositing were submerged briefly and then sat in a humid room overnight before anyone contacted a repair service. By the time they reached our Hyderabad workshop — packed in cardboard with silica gel and couriered via overnight freight — they had been in wet conditions for roughly 36 hours. Three were non-functional on arrival. One powered on but had intermittent freezing. All four had recoverable data. Three were fully restored to working condition.

What the bench microscope revealed

Step 1: Triage by corrosion stage

When a water-damaged laptop arrives at the bench, the first step is assessing how far corrosion has progressed. We use a microscope to examine the motherboard trace areas, particularly around the power delivery circuit, RAM slots, and the connectors where the display, keyboard, and trackpad ribbon cables attach. Corrosion on these areas looks like green or white crystalline growth — that is oxidised copper and tin from the board’s surface-mount components.

Of the four machines: two had early-stage corrosion (surface deposits only, underlying traces intact), one had mid-stage corrosion with one damaged trace near the power IC that required micro-soldering to bridge, and one had severe corrosion around the RAM slots from having been powered on while wet — the owner had pressed the power button hoping it would “restart normally.” Powering on a wet laptop accelerates corrosion damage because electricity passing through water-contaminated circuits heats the water and speeds up the electrochemical reaction.

Step 2: Ultrasonic cleaning — the first intervention

All four boards went into our ultrasonic cleaner (a machine that vibrates a cleaning solution at very high frequency to remove deposits from board surfaces without physical contact) with isopropyl alcohol solution. This removes the corrosion products and stops the oxidation process. After cleaning and drying, the boards were examined again under the microscope to assess remaining damage.

The two early-stage machines came out of the ultrasonic cleaner with clean boards and no remaining damage — they booted normally after reassembly. The mid-stage machine required the trace bridge repair, which added a few hours to the process. The severely corroded fourth machine had lost two RAM slot contacts permanently; it was repaired by rerouting the signal traces, which is a specialist micro-soldering technique that bypasses the damaged area entirely.

Step 3: Data recovery from the non-functional machines

Even the machine that was non-functional on arrival had an intact SSD. The NVMe SSD (a high-speed storage drive standard in most modern laptops, mounted on a small card that plugs into the motherboard) was physically undamaged because it sits in a recessed slot away from the areas where water entered the chassis. We removed the drives, connected them to a clean bench machine, and confirmed all project files were readable.

The studio’s main concern was a 3D compositing project with a client deadline three days away. We prioritised getting the SSD data onto an external drive within six hours of receiving the machines — the board-level work on the physical laptops continued in parallel. The studio was back to working from the recovered files the same evening they arrived at the bench.

Step 4: The India angle — monsoon humidity and corrosion acceleration

India’s southwest monsoon creates the worst possible conditions for liquid-damaged electronics. Relative humidity of 8595% means that even after the visible water is gone, moisture in the air continues to supply the electrochemical reaction. A board that has been in a humid room for 48 hours has accumulated far more corrosion than the same board in a dry environment. We see the result every July and August — machines that were “only briefly wet” arriving weeks later with extensive corrosion because the owner assumed the problem had resolved when the machine dried out.

If you are in a city with a strong monsoon season and a laptop gets wet, the correct response is: power off immediately, remove the battery if it is removable, and get the machine to a chip-level repair shop within 24 hours. When to ship and what it costs

Signs you need professional water damage repair

Any of these justify immediate professional intervention: water entered the keyboard or ventilation ports, the machine was powered on after water entry, you can see discolouration on internal components through the vents, or the machine powers on but freezes, shows display artifacts, or has keys that no longer respond. Do not use the machine until it has been properly cleaned and dried by a specialist.

Typical cost in India

Liquid damage repair ranges from ₹2,500 for minor spill cleanup to ₹15,000+ for extensive board corrosion. For courier repair cases, we assess via photos sent over WhatsApp before you ship and give you a cost indication. Turnaround for couriered machines is typically 3–5 days. No Fix No Fee applies to water damage cases too.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team

The single most important variable in water damage repair is how quickly the machine is powered off and how quickly it reaches a qualified bench. The VFX studio lost one machine to severe corrosion because someone tried to power it on — an understandable impulse, but a damaging one. Speed saves machines. If you are outside Hyderabad and your city does not have chip-level repair specialists, our ship-to-us service is designed exactly for this scenario.
