Picture an architecture student, aged 20, in Falaknuma. This is a typical scenario, not a real customer. A seller is offering a used MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip at a price that fits her budget. The laptop looks clean and runs her design software well. What she cannot see is how a fault would be handled in two years, once any plan has ended. This post shows how to check coverage, what Apple states about parts, and how to weigh repair cost against a newer machine.
If a used M1 Pro MacBook Pro develops a fault, who repairs it?
Short answer: check the serial number first. If Apple coverage is still active, Apple is your first stop. If it has ended, you can choose between Apple's paid service and an independent repair. Decide before buying, and keep some of your budget aside for a possible repair.
How do you check Apple coverage on a used Mac?
Every Mac has a serial number, printed on the underside and shown in the About This Mac window (the menu path can differ by macOS version). Apple's coverage page lets you view device coverage and benefits after you enter that serial number. Visit Apple's coverage checker while the seller is with you.
It tells you whether the warranty or an AppleCare plan is active. If the page shows no coverage, treat the laptop as a machine you will pay to repair yourself, and price it that way. Ask the seller to sign out of their Apple account and erase the Mac before you pay, so it is not locked to them.
What does Apple state about parts for older Macs?
Apple's India support page states that owners of Mac and other products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers for a minimum of five years from when Apple last distributed the product for sale. It adds that service and parts may be obtained for longer, as required by law or for up to seven years, subject to parts availability.
For Mac laptops, Apple states an extended battery-only repair period of up to 10 years may be available, also subject to parts availability. Apple says it discontinues hardware service for certain technologically obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts for those. So the answer depends on your exact model. Read Apple's parts and service page and look up the model before you buy. The page changes over time, so check it on the day.
What can an independent repair offer later?
Laptop Repair World can inspect a used MacBook Pro before you buy it, record its condition and serial number, and quote any fault in writing, listing parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work begins. If testing finds another fault, you approve a revised quotation before further paid work. Each part is named as original, compatible or refurbished, with its own warranty.
The repair carries a 30-day warranty, subject to terms. No Fix No Fee means no repair charge if the fault is not fixed. The visit carries a ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. Whether a given MacBook fault can be repaired depends on the fault and the parts; we confirm after diagnosis. See our MacBook Pro repair page and the Apple repair hub.
What should you compare before buying?
Heat, dust and humid Hyderabad summers
A MacBook that has spent years in a hot, humid or dusty room may show wear that a quick test does not reveal. Look for a swollen base, a warm underside at idle, loud fans, or a battery that drains fast. Ask the seller about spills and drops; liquid damage can appear weeks later and is a separate, costly repair. Our page on buying a refurbished laptop in India adds a general checklist.
How to weigh the price
The student finds that the used M1 Pro is priced well below a newer model, but Apple's coverage page shows no active plan. She asks LRW to inspect it. The technician checks the battery health, ports, keyboard and display, records the serial number, and writes down any weak points. She then asks herself: if the battery or screen needed attention next year, could I afford that? She compares the likely repair cost, quoted in writing, with the price gap to a newer model. If the gap is large, the used machine can make sense; if small, the newer one may be wiser.
When is Apple's coverage the better route?
If the laptop is still under warranty or has an active AppleCare plan, take faults to Apple first. Plan terms change, so check Apple's current page and ask whether any plan can move to you as the new owner. Read the plan terms before any outside repair on a covered Mac. Our Apple service centre versus independent repair page compares both routes.
When to get help
- You want a used MacBook Pro inspected before you pay.
- The battery drains fast or the base looks swollen.
- The screen, keyboard or ports behave oddly.
- The laptop shows a fault after purchase and coverage has ended.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before you hand over money, photograph the serial number, check coverage on Apple's page, and ask the seller to erase and sign out of the Mac. Keep a small repair fund aside, and let the inspection decide the deal, not the price alone.
