The bench case — HITEC City startup office, five laptops
What arrived on the bench
Five laptops arrived together: three Dell Latitude 5550s, one HP EliteBook 840 G11, and one Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13. All five had been plugged into a single APC Back-UPS 1500VA unit that was approximately four years old, with an unknown battery replacement history. During a routine Hyderabad power cut at around 3 PM, the UPS failed — instead of switching to battery, it transferred to bypass mode and passed the incoming grid restoration spike (estimated above 280V based on the damage pattern) directly to all five connected chargers.
Bench findings — five separate cases, one pattern
All five laptops showed the same primary damage: failed input MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors — power transistors on the motherboard that regulate the charger input voltage to safe levels before it reaches the rest of the board). Three of the five also had failed EC chips (Embedded Controller — the dedicated microcontroller that manages power sequencing; its failure makes the laptop appear completely unresponsive). The NVMe SSDs in all five machines were intact. Data was 100% recoverable because the SSDs were running on battery-backed DC power at the moment of the spike, not directly on the mains-powered input stage. Total parts cost across all five units: ₹62,000. Labour and testing: ₹18,000. Combined: ₹80,000. A quality UPS replacement: ₹12,000. The arithmetic is clear.
