You have been playing CS2 or Valorant for months without issues. Windows 11 updates automatically to 26H1 — the major 2026 H1 feature update — and suddenly the games will not launch. Valorant crashes with an error code on startup, CS2 shows "BattlEye Service Failed to Start", or the game launches briefly and crashes to desktop with no error. This is a known issue with the Windows 11 26H1 kernel driver load order change, and it is fixable without reinstalling Windows.
What changed in Windows 11 26H1 that affects anti-cheat
Anti-cheat systems like Riot Vanguard (which runs as a kernel-mode driver — software that operates at the deepest level of Windows, with access to hardware and system memory) and BattlEye need to load early in the boot process to scan for cheat tools before the game starts. Windows 11 26H1 introduced changes to the Windows Early Launch Anti-Malware (ELAM — a security feature that lets approved security software load before other drivers) load sequence. This inadvertently pushed ELAM drivers to claim memory regions that Vanguard and BattlEye needed for their own kernel allocations.
The result: Vanguard exits with error code 57 ("Vanguard requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot") or 68 ("Vanguard is not running"), and BattlEye fails with "BattlEye Service Failed to Start". Both errors are misleading — the actual cause is the memory allocation conflict, not a missing TPM or Secure Boot.
Fix for Valorant / Riot Vanguard crash on Windows 11 26H1
Step 1: Uninstall Vanguard completely (not Valorant)
Open Settings → Apps → Installed Apps. Search for "Riot Vanguard". Click the three-dot menu and select Uninstall. This removes only the Vanguard kernel driver, not Valorant itself. Confirm the uninstall and restart your laptop.
Step 2: Verify Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 are enabled
After restart, before launching Valorant, verify that Secure Boot is enabled in your BIOS. Open System Information (type msinfo32 in the Start menu search and press Enter). In the System Summary, look for "Secure Boot State" — it must show "On". If it shows "Off", restart into BIOS (usually by pressing F2, F10, or Del during startup — the key varies by laptop brand). In BIOS, navigate to the Security or Boot section and enable Secure Boot. Save and exit.
Also verify TPM 2.0: in System Information, look for "TPM Version". It must show 2.0. Most laptops from 2020 onwards have TPM 2.0 hardware — if yours shows "Not Available", TPM may be disabled in BIOS. Look for "fTPM" or "TPM" settings in the Security section of BIOS and enable it.
Step 3: Launch Valorant to reinstall Vanguard
Launch Valorant from the Riot Games launcher. When Vanguard detects it is missing, it automatically downloads and installs the latest version. Allow the installation to complete and restart when prompted. After the restart, launch Valorant again — it should start without errors.
Additional step: clean the boot configuration
Open Command Prompt as administrator (right-click Start → "Windows Terminal (Admin)" or search for "cmd" and select "Run as administrator"). Run these two commands:
bcdedit /set nointegritychecks off
bcdedit /set testsigning off
These ensure that Windows is not running in test-signing mode (a development mode that allows unsigned drivers, which Vanguard rejects) and that driver integrity checks are enforced. Restart after running these commands.
Fix for CS2 / BattlEye crash on Windows 11 26H1
Step 1: Verify game files in Steam
Open Steam, right-click Counter-Strike 2 in your library, and select Properties. Go to the Local Files tab and click "Verify Integrity of Game Files". Steam checks all game files against the server manifest and redownloads any that are missing or modified. BattlEye's launcher components are included in this check. The verification takes 2–10 minutes.
Step 2: Reinstall BattlEye manually
After file verification, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the CS2 installation folder (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\ or search for "csgo" in Windows Explorer). Inside, find the folder named "BattlEye" or "game\csgo\BattlEye". Right-click on Install_BattlEye.bat and select "Run as administrator". A command prompt window opens, runs the installation, and closes. After it finishes, restart your laptop and launch CS2 through Steam.
Step 3: Check for conflicting kernel-mode software
Other kernel-mode software — particularly VPN clients, disk encryption tools, and some antivirus products — can conflict with BattlEye under Windows 11 26H1. Open Device Manager (Win+X → Device Manager) and look for any devices with yellow exclamation marks, which indicate driver conflicts. If you use a VPN, temporarily disable it and try launching CS2. Mullvad, ProtonVPN, and some corporate VPN clients have known conflicts with BattlEye on 26H1 — check the BattlEye compatibility list at battleye.com.
India-specific gaming context: summer overheating and throttling
A separate class of CS2 and Valorant crashes in India is caused not by DRM issues but by thermal throttling. Indian summers push gaming laptop GPU temperatures to 88–95°C even with clean vents. At these temperatures, the GPU reduces its clock speed to prevent damage — and if the game's frame rate drops suddenly during this throttle event, the game engine can misinterpret the timing change as a connection timeout or anti-cheat anomaly and disconnect the player or crash.
If your game crashes are accompanied by the laptop fan suddenly spinning at maximum speed followed by a crash, suspect thermal throttling rather than a DRM issue. Our overheating fix service covers thermal paste replacement and vent cleaning for gaming laptops. A thermal service on a gaming laptop costs ₹2,000–₹4,500 and can reduce GPU temperatures by 10–20°C under full load.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The 26H1 Vanguard crash was the single most common software support call we received from gamers in the weeks after the update rolled out in India. In every case, fully uninstalling Vanguard and reinstalling after the restart resolved the issue. Do not try to "repair" Vanguard — full removal and fresh install is the only reliable path. WhatsApp us at 7702503336 if you are still seeing crashes after following these steps — we can help diagnose whether the issue is software-side or a hardware GPU / cooling problem.
