Why is my SSD suddenly slow?

Short answer: An SSD (solid-state drive, the storage chip that holds your files and Windows installation) slows down significantly when it is more than 80–85% full. At that point, the drive’s controller cannot find empty cells to write data into, and must instead read, modify, and rewrite existing blocks — a process that is 3–5 times slower than writing to empty cells.
