You are shopping for a slim new laptop, or you already own one, and the spec sheet says LPDDR5X where older laptops said DDR4 or DDR5. This guide is for anyone who wants to know, in plain words, what that label means for upgrades and for repair bills. It shows what the makers have stated for three popular models, what they have not said, and how to check your own laptop.
What does LPDDR5X mean for repair cost?
Short answer: LPDDR5X is a low-power, fast type of memory that is commonly soldered (fixed) to the laptop's main board. You often cannot add or swap it later, and a fault in it may need board-level repair. The cost depends on the model, so confirm whether your laptop's memory is soldered and ask for a quote after diagnosis.
What is LPDDR5X, in plain words?
RAM is the working memory a laptop uses while it runs programs. Older laptops often carried RAM on a small plug-in stick (a module, in a socket you can open). LPDDR5X is a newer low-power type, designed to save battery and fit in thin laptops. Makers commonly place it directly on the main board, so there is no stick to pull out. Whether your model does so is a model-by-model fact, so please check. Our DDR4 vs DDR5 guide covers the plug-in types.
What do makers say about three recent laptops?
These are the makers' maximums, not what the starting price includes. Whether a technician can replace the memory later is not stated for these three models. Ask the seller, or look up the service manual for your exact model number. Do not assume that memory can be upgraded later on a thin laptop; confirm it before you buy.
How do you check if your memory is soldered?
- Find your exact model number on the base of the laptop or in Settings, under System, then About (the wording can differ slightly between versions).
- Search that model number with the words 'service manual' or 'memory upgrade'.
- Look for words such as 'soldered', 'onboard' or 'integrated memory'. A manual that shows memory slots means plug-in modules.
- If it is unclear, send us the model number on WhatsApp and we will tell you before you spend anything.
What drives the repair cost?
- Where the memory sits. On the board, a memory fault is a board repair, which generally takes more skill and time than swapping a stick.
- The model. Some boards are easier to work on and to source parts for.
- Whether it is the memory or something else. Crashes and blue screens can also come from software, storage or heat, so diagnosis matters first.
- Labour and testing time. Board-level work needs careful testing afterwards.
We do not quote a rupee figure in advance. The exact quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for your approval before any work begins. Our laptop memory service page explains what we check first.
Is soldered memory a problem?
Not by itself. Soldered memory is a design choice that keeps laptops thin and light and saves battery. The practical point is only that the choice is final. If you will use heavy programs for years, buy the larger memory size at the start. Do not open the laptop base yourself to look for memory slots, because it can damage clips, cables and the battery.
Memory size, heat and power cuts
Memory prices have risen this year, and a bigger memory option costs more at purchase, so it is tempting to pick the smaller one. For a laptop you plan to keep for several years, think about this carefully, because you cannot add memory afterwards. Heat and dust shorten the life of any board, so keep vents clear and avoid using the laptop on a bed. Voltage dips and power cuts are another stress, so use a surge-protected socket. Far from a service centre, courier time adds days to a board repair.
When to get help
- The laptop shows blue screens or restarts at random.
- It will not start, or starts and shuts down at once.
- You are unsure whether memory is soldered before a purchase.
- A shop offers to upgrade memory on a thin laptop without checking the model.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Write the model number and the memory size on the invoice or in your notes on the day you buy. If you plan to keep the laptop for years, choose the larger memory option at the start. When something goes wrong, a clear diagnosis before any quote protects you from paying for the wrong part.
