Why Snapdragon X Elite GPU drivers keep crashing
Short answer: The Snapdragon X Elite is an ARM-based Qualcomm chip — fundamentally different architecture from Intel or AMD. Its integrated Adreno GPU uses Qualcomm's own display driver, which was immature in its first year on Windows 11. Two crash scenarios dominate: x86-emulated apps (Chrome, older Adobe tools, legacy Indian banking apps) try to access DirectX 12 features through the emulation layer and hit driver paths the Adreno driver has not fully validated; and the HAGS (hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling) feature, designed for discrete Nvidia/AMD GPUs, can destabilize the Adreno scheduling model. Both are software/driver issues — no hardware defect is involved.
How to fix Snapdragon X Elite GPU driver crashes
Step 1: Update the Qualcomm Adreno driver via Windows Update
Go to Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options → Optional Updates. Any pending Qualcomm display driver update appears here as "Qualcomm Technologies Inc. Display Adapter" with a version number. Install it and restart. Alternatively, visit your laptop manufacturer's support page (Dell XPS 13 9350, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge, Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x all have Snapdragon X models) and download the latest display driver package — OEM-signed drivers are often more stable than generic Qualcomm packages. This alone resolves crashes for the majority of users who have not kept optional updates current.
Step 2: Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
HAGS allows the GPU to manage its own memory scheduling. On Snapdragon X Elite, it can cause the Adreno driver to crash under certain workloads. To disable it: Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings and toggle off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. A restart is required. Test the laptop under the workload that was causing crashes. Disabling HAGS resolves driver crashes for around half of affected Snapdragon X Elite users based on community reports.
Step 3: Switch to native ARM64 app versions
x86 app emulation on Snapdragon X Elite is handled by the Prism translation layer. When an emulated app calls DirectX 12 with GPU compute features, Prism translates the calls through an additional layer that the Adreno driver has not always handled cleanly. The fix is to use ARM64-native app versions where available: Chrome has an ARM64 build, WhatsApp Desktop has native ARM64, and Microsoft Office runs natively on ARM. Step 4: The India angle — Tally, banking apps, and Indian software ecosystems
Indian business users on Snapdragon X Elite face a specific challenge: most Indian business software — Tally ERP, Busy Accounting, and bank-specific desktop utilities — is x86-only. Running these under emulation is the primary GPU driver crash trigger in Indian office environments. The practical workaround is to run Tally on a separate Windows 11 x86 machine (or a virtual machine on an Intel-based laptop) and access the Snapdragon machine for productivity work. When the screen goes black and won't recover
If a GPU driver crash results in a black screen that does not recover even after waiting 2–3 minutes, and the laptop requires a hard reboot every time, the Adreno driver is in a state that no current optional update has fixed. At this point, a fresh Windows 11 ARM install from official media — preserving personal data — resets the driver stack and often resolves persistent crashes.

Windows 11 allows you to set per-app GPU scheduling preferences. For apps that crash frequently under the Adreno GPU, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics, click Browse, add the problematic application, and set its GPU preference to Power saving. On Snapdragon X Elite, "Power saving" routes rendering through a lower-priority GPU queue that the Adreno driver handles more reliably than the default "High performance" queue.
