If you've seen the name "Dynabook" on a laptop and wondered where Toshiba went — this is the answer. Dynabook is the current brand behind what used to be Toshiba's laptop line, now operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sharp Corporation. In India the brand has a quiet presence: a handful of corporate-focused models come in through IT distributors, with very little consumer retail visibility. Who makes Dynabook now?
From Toshiba to Sharp — the short version
Toshiba made laptops for 35 years, from the T1100 in 1985 through to the early 2019 models. But after a serious accounting scandal in 2015 left the company under financial pressure, Toshiba started shedding divisions. In 2018, Sharp Corporation — itself now a subsidiary of Foxconn — acquired 80.1% of Toshiba's laptop division (then called Toshiba Client Solutions Co., Ltd.) for approximately USD 36 million. Sharp exercised a call option on the remaining 19.9% in June 2020, making the division wholly owned.
The company was renamed Dynabook Inc. in January 2019, and the laptop brand transitioned from "Toshiba" to "Dynabook" globally from 2019 onward. Toshiba Corporation no longer makes or sells laptops. Dynabook Inc. operates out of Tokyo and continues to engineer, manufacture, and sell laptops — just under the Dynabook name, as a Sharp company.
What did Sharp inherit?
Sharp inherited the full Toshiba laptop engineering team, the existing product road map, the MIL-STD testing programmes for the Portégé and Tecra business lines, and the manufacturing relationships. This is why a Dynabook Tecra A40-K and a Toshiba Tecra A40-E look strikingly similar in chassis layout, keyboard design, and internal screw patterns — they're built on the same engineering lineage. Portégé series — ultralight premium convertibles
The Portégé (pronounced por-teh-ZHAY) is Dynabook's flagship ultraportable line, continuing the most celebrated part of the Toshiba legacy. Current models include the Portégé X30W, a 13.3-inch 2-in-1 convertible with a 360-degree hinge, IPS touchscreen, and magnesium alloy chassis. It weighs under 1.2 kg and is MIL-STD-810 rated (military-grade testing — meaning it has passed drop, vibration, and temperature stress tests). The Portégé X40-M is the 14-inch iteration: thinner dark-blue aluminium alloy chassis, Intel Core Ultra processor options, and a full-size keyboard designed for extended business typing.
The Portégé Z40L-N is particularly interesting — it targets the sub-1 kg ultralight segment, which very few Windows laptops occupy. Think Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon territory: extreme portability with business-grade durability claims. These are not mass-market machines; they're priced and positioned for corporate executives and road warriors on per-unit purchasing.
Tecra series — durable business workhorses
The Tecra has historically been Dynabook's volume business seller: more practical than glamorous, built for IT departments that need reliability and standardised configurations. The current Tecra A40-M is a 14-inch machine with Intel Core processor options, a full-size keyboard with numpad on some SKUs, and ergonomic consideration baked into its palm-rest design. The Tecra A50-K extends this to a 15.6-inch screen — useful for analysts, accountants, or anyone who works across multiple spreadsheet columns all day.
Tecra models have historically offered more port variety than the ultra-slim Portégé — HDMI, USB-A, USB-C, RJ45 ethernet — without requiring a dongle hub. For enterprise buyers who need to plug into projectors, legacy monitors, and wired networks in offices without Wi-Fi 6, that matters. Both models continue the MIL-STD-810 durability ratings.
Satellite Pro series — accessible business-consumer crossover
The Satellite Pro is Dynabook's most accessible line — lower price than Portégé and Tecra, still positioned as a business laptop rather than a pure consumer machine. The Satellite Pro C40-K (14-inch) and Satellite Pro C50-K (15.6-inch) run Intel Core processors in more budget-friendly configurations: up to 16 GB RAM, SSD storage, Windows 11 Pro. Build quality is a step below Portégé and Tecra — no MIL-STD rating — but they retain the brand's generally solid build standards relative to consumer-grade competitors.
The Satellite Pro makes the most sense for small businesses, educational institutions, or organisations that want Dynabook brand consistency in their fleet without paying for the premium Portégé or Tecra configurations.
B-series and education models
Dynabook also produces B-series mainstream business laptops and purpose-built education models (including the ruggedised E11 series aimed at school deployments). These are primarily sold to institutional buyers — schools, government departments, and large enterprises — and rarely appear in the Indian retail channel at all. If you're seeing a Dynabook B-series, it almost certainly came through an institutional procurement contract.
Buying a Dynabook in India 2026
The honest picture: B2B first, consumer almost absent
Dynabook does have a formal India presence — india.dynabook.com is live, and authorised distributors like Radiant (Delhi) carry the brand. However, the distribution model is fundamentally B2B: IT managers in corporate procurement teams can request quotations through authorised channels. If you walk into a Croma, Reliance Digital, or any consumer electronics store looking for a Dynabook, you won't find one. This is a deliberate positioning choice, not a logistics gap.
The Tecra A40-E series (an earlier generation) has appeared on Amazon India from import sellers, typically priced in the ₹80,000–₹90,000 range for Core i5 / 8 GB / 512 GB SSD configurations. Newer current-generation models (A40-M, X40-M) may be available via import-focused sellers, but pricing will be higher and warranty validity becomes a critical question to ask before purchase.
Warranty reality when buying through grey market or import
This deserves a direct answer: if you buy a Dynabook in India through an import channel rather than the official authorised distributor, your warranty is serviced by whoever sold it to you — not Dynabook India. There is no walk-in Dynabook authorised service centre network in India the way HP, Dell, or Lenovo have. If you need warranty service, it typically means shipping the unit back to the importer or seller. Always confirm the warranty terms in writing before purchasing an imported Dynabook. A corporate buyer going through an authorised distributor has a clearer warranty pathway than an individual buyer purchasing from an Amazon third-party seller.

Portégé X30W — hinge wear on heavy converters
The X30W's 360-degree hinge is engineered to handle frequent flipping between laptop, tent, and tablet modes. But like all convertible hinges, it accumulates wear faster than a standard clamshell. Units used in tablet mode frequently — especially by field workers or presenters — start showing hinge looseness or stiffness after two to three years of heavy use.
